Hello, I really like your analysis of Kataang. It makes me love Kataang more!!! I wanted to ask a question on Katara abandonment issues. I saw a take that it was wrong for the writers to pair Katara with said issues with a guy (Aang) that constantly runs away and leaves her, especially in the Awakening it triggered because of Aang. I dont know. It left a weird taste because i dont think so, but the person with this take was convincing 😅

I don’t remember how and when Aang constantly does this before the Awakening. It’s why she’s triggered in the first place because she is so used to Aang always being there for her or coming back to her.

Even in the episode before this, she says to him, “I knew you’d come back.” She knew where he was, knew he was doing something important and has no idea how he even knew she was in danger but she quite literally was expecting him to come back to save her. This is Aang in Katara’s eyes. Someone who saves her, comes back for her, follows through for her. There is nothing that suggests she’s used to him just abandoning her and she is triggered in the Awakening is because she is in fact, not used to this happening. Because she has no idea where he went or if he’s ever coming back. like this is not at all normal…?

As for after the Awakening, the only time I can think of is when he walks off to meditate and accidentally washes up on a giant animal??? He wasn’t trying to leave and she specifically says, “Aang is gonna come back.” Like this is a boy she knows comes back and trusts to do what he has to do from experience. He has never faltered in her eyes so I’m confused why this would be a problem in their canon relationship post canon.

Also, to bring this back to Katara as an individual character: that whole speech was about her growing out of her abandonment issues with her father. She knows why Hakoda left but she was holding that inside because she filled the void he left with Aang. It’s actually doing Katara a disservice to insist that she still has the same abandonment complex in her adulthood(??) when Hakoda affirms to her that he loved her and missed her too. To hammer this point home, the episode ends with them finding Aang and him affirming to her that he does need her and their friends to end this war. That he was not thinking logically and will agree to stick to the invasion plan. She needed that moment with her father to grow as a person so I’m confused how this is supposed to be a good argument purely in the name of Katara herself, regardless of a ship. Like are they arguing she… never grew from her daddy issues as a child? When it’s the opposite of what the episode sets out to accomplish for her? Is this supposed to be by someone who actually likes Katara or…?
