Somehow they always end up this way
Significance of Keith’s “I love you”
Look, first of all, I’m approaching this generally okay, you have to understand something about this scene. Keith just spent two fucking years with his mom. TWO FUCKING YEARS. What would he do if he finally had time to spend with the mother he never knew but now knows that she has loved him all along and never wanted to abandon him in the first place? He would get to know her and in exchange, get her to know him.
Keith had no one. His dad died. He didn’t seem to have many friends. He was alone.
So what stories did he have for his mom? Of course it was about his mentor, his only friend, his Shiro. In those two years, imagine the stories he’d dig up about Shiro to his mom, reliving every memory, remembering the life he had on Earth with Shiro. How Shiro vouched for him, how Shiro taught him, how Shiro trained him, how Shiro cared for him, how Shiro was always there for him.
Keith’s wholesome love for Shiro is not new but retelling his past with Shiro to his mother probably enhanced it. Unlike in season 2′s “You’re like a brother to me”, Keith admits wholeheartedly that Shiro IS his brother.
So yeah, Keith’s “I love you” is more than just words, it’s everything. It’s a ‘Thank you’ for everything Shiro has done, it’s a plea for Shiro to wake the fuck up, it’s Keith reaching out to Shiro’s core, it’s Keith digging out the affection Keith knows Shiro has for him.
And you know what? I think Shiro heard him, loud and clear. Because the Black Lion saved Keith just as how Red would have. Only this time, it’s not just because of Keith’s connection to the Black Lion, it’s because of Keith’s connection to the real Shiro in the Black Lion.
I don’t care what type of love is between Shiro and Keith, all I care about is how deep it runs, how much these two wholesomely care for one another and how far they’re willing to go for one another. They have cared for one another since S1E1 but it really shined through in season 6 and I can’t be any happier for this monumental development.
I don’t know about Shiro (cuz this is mostly from Keith’s POV) but as a gen-loving fan, I know that Shiro is Keith’s one and only.
