Thorin -
“You know this, my darling.” Thorin rubbed warm circles into your shoulder as you frowned at the book on the table between you. “Where is Rohan located?”
“Rohan...” You rubbed at your face and eyes as you thought. “Rohan is in the land of Calenardhon, within the great vale.”
“Between the Misty Mountains and the White Mountains, very good.” Thorin gave you a patient smile. “You’re doing well.”
You gave an absent nod and turned your attention back to the page. Or, you pretended to turn back to the page. In reality, your mind was desperate for escape from the work before you. Your body craved sleep. But there was still so much work to be done. Work that could not be put aside.
Thorin studied your face for a moment, his hand growing still on your shoulder. “Come now,” he reached over and closed the book. “You must rest.”
“I shouldn’t.” You replied, even as you pushed your chair back. “I should stay here and work.”
“Stay here and fall asleep, you mean.” Thorin stood and helped you to stand as well. “I’ll have a bath drawn to relax you.”
“I do not think I’ll need much relaxing.” You yawned and rubbed your neck. “The only thing I wish for is a place in your bed.”
Thorin’s pride was evident in his grin. “Now that, I believe I can manage.”
Kili-
You had to study for an exam and Kili had insisted on helping. However, after the first couple hours or so he had gotten up for a break and never really seemed to truly return. Kili was never one for books, unless it was poetry. He was unable to sit completely still, always standing or pacing or drumming his fingers or toying with his mother’s rune stone.
He was toying with the rune stone now. You looked up from your book to see him tossing it up into the air again and again. “If you’re bored,” you began.
“I’m not bored, I’m taking a break.”
“For six hours?”
“Really?” Kili stopped throwing the stone to look at you. “You’ve been studying for that long?”
You shrugged, wincing as the gesture caused your shoulders to give a painful crack. Concern drifted over Kili’s expression. He stood and pocketed the stone.
“You know, perhaps you should get some rest.” He suggested, crossing to you.
“A scholar does not rest.”
“Good thing there isn’t one of those in our midst.” Kili ducked the pencil you threw at him.
“There most certainly is not.” You gave him a look before returning to your work. It didn’t matter that you could no longer read because your vision was too blurry. Or that you were instantly upset at yourself for snapping at Kili simply because he was trying to help.
“Look, Kili. I want so desperately to pass this exam,” you began, cutting yourself off with a small gasp as Kili’s warm, strong hands rested on your aching shoulders.
Kili began to rub your shoulders expertly, causing you to all but melt back into the chair. “What was that?” His fingers moved to trail up the side of your neck, smirking down at you as you tilted your head back to rest against him. “I couldn’t quite hear you.”
“Kili,” you muttered, trying to sound annoyed but failing miserably as your eyes drifted shut. His hands relaxing your shoulders was pure bliss and you would have done anything just for him to continue.
“You’ll take a break then? Excellent.” Kili leaned down and pressed a kiss on your forehead. “I knew you would see the sense of it.”
Fortunately for him, you were too tired to argue.
Fili-
You were sitting before your books lost in thought when Fili came up behind you, looking up as he rested his hands on your shoulders.
“Darling,” he whispered, leaning down to kiss and nuzzle at your cheek. “It’s time to go to bed.”
“One more chapter.” You muttered, closing your eyes as his beard tickled your cheek. “Fili, please. I do not wish to be distracted.”
“And I do not wish to sleep in a cold bed alone.” Fili smiled as you tilted your head back, kissing you deeply as he moved to close your books and pull back your chair.
You broke the kiss. “Fili, no. If I am unprepared for the exams,”
“You are prepared, my love.” Fili took you by the hands and pulled you to your feet. “Trust me.”
You managed a small smile. “But the final chapter,”
“Can wait until tomorrow morning, I’m sure. Now come to bed with me.”
You reluctantly allowed Fili to scoop you into his arms and carry you off to bed, smiling as he kissed your jaw and whispered quiet nothings in your ear. Exam or not, you doubted you would regret not reading the last chapter that night.
