Govan Old Stones Collection, Viking 'Hogback' Stones, Govan Old Parish Church, Glasgow, Scotland
Hogback tombstone from Govan Old Parish Church (Glasgow, 800s – 1000s).
These large tombstones are only found in the British Isles, produced by a hybrid British/Viking culture. Govan (today a district & parish in south-western Glasgow) is situated on the River Clyde, and was easily accessible to Viking ships.
Some hogbacks have geometric tile patterns, perhaps mimicking the roofs of Viking longhouses; some have dragon-like creatures on the ends.
