Oh, there she is again.
Sehun tries hard not to roll his eyes into another dimension as he sees her walk by. It feels like wherever he goes, she’s always there—sarcastic remarks and all. For two years now it seems like she has locked her eyes on him as someone to bully and tease. He’s never done anything to her before, and yet somehow she loves to pick on him.
He begins to look for a way to go around and avoid her. He is not in the mood to hear her speak today.
“Oh, look who’s here?”
Sehun mentally groans, turning towards her with a scowl, not amused by her pun—a pun which she says literally every time they meet. “What do you want?”
She bats her eyelashes innocently, giggling along with her friends. “Oh, nothing. Just thinking about you’re such a disappointment.”
Sehun growls, eyes narrowing dangerously on her. “You’re not the one to judge if I’m a disappointment or not.”
“No.” She agrees easily with a hum. “But I bet your family is. I overheard your brother saying something about you being a disappointment a few days ago in the Slytherin common room.”
That certainly hit a nerve. Being a pureblood from a family of Slytherins, it was definitely a big surprise when he ended up in Hufflepuff instead. His family gave him the cold shoulder and treated him passive-aggressively for months before he decided to just stop going home during breaks altogether. Instead, he often went to Junmyeon’s house, since he’s like a brother to him.
“You know what?” Sehun seethes out, hand in his robe pocket, hold tight on his wand. “Slither out of this.” Before anyone in the courtyard could react, he has is wand out pointed at the ground in front of her, yelling, “Bombarda!”
The ground explodes, eliciting a shriek from her and her friends as they back away immediately, arms up to shield themselves from the blow.
Sehun grins, smug as he slips his wand back into his robe.
“Oh Sehun!”
Not so smug anymore.
He flinches at the harsh tone, turning to see a handful of professors hurrying over, with Professor McGonagall leading the small team. She looks furious, the wrinkles on her face deep. “How could you use an Exploding Charm on a fellow classmate?”
“I-I didn’t hurt her.” He stammers, heart pounding as he takes a tentative step back.
“But you could have.” Her tone is taut. “Detention.”
“Yes.” He whispers, head hanging low, “I’m sorry.”
Professor McGonagall turns sharply towards her, who is frozen in place with shock. Professor McGonagall narrows her eyes on the Slytherin. “Young lady, you will join him in detention.”
“What?” She squeaks, eyes wide. “But—”
One stern look from Professor McGonagall and she screws her mouth shut, a pout appearing on her lips.
“I can’t believe this.” She scowls, arms crossed tightly over her chest as she continuously glares at Sehun. “I’m stuck in detention with you.”
“Right,” Sehun rolls his eyes. “Like I want to be here with you.”
She huffs, though she stays pleasantly quiet after that. No mean remarks, puns, insults. Sehun should feel pleased, and yet he finds it rather strange, and he couldn’t help himself from glancing at her time to time.
“Yeh kids always gettin’ trouble.” Hagrid says as he walks in front of them, lantern in hand and Fang by his side. “Yeh like spendin’ time with me, don’t cha?”
“Yeah,” Sehun rubs his arm, feeling a chill as they go deeper into the Forbidden Forest. “Love to.”
Hagrid lets out a rumbly laugh, hugging his belly. “Well, alright. Heard there’s an injured unicorn around ‘ere. Go find it and bring it back. Take Fang with yeh and be safe.”
“Wait, wait.” She whimpers. “You’re letting us go in alone?”
“Well, yeh got your wands, don’t cha?” Hagrid raises a bushy brow at her. “If somethin’ happens, Fang will let me know, won’t cha, buddy?” He affectionately rubs the dog’s jaw and the dog wags his tail in response.
“Uh…Okay, I guess.” Sehun rubs his neck, glancing over at her who looks a little too pale.
“Meet me back here in about an hour.” Hagrid says, waving them goodbye as he goes another direction. “Don’t get into trouble!”
After his big form disappears into the darkness, the two of them and Fang stand there awkwardly. Sehun isn’t sure what to do, but it’s very dark and Hagrid took the lantern, so he takes out his wand, whispering, “Lumos.”
She does the same, her voice trembling the slightest bit in the silence. Sehun frowns, using the light of his wand to take a better look at her. Her arms are tight around herself, teeth sinking into her bottom lip as she glances around, her skin paler than usual.
Things click into place as Sehun lets out a smug grin. “Are you scared of the dark?”
She turns to him with a scowl, eyes narrowing dangerously. “No.”
“Really?” He chuckles. “Okay.” He lets go of the spell, making the tip of her wand the only light source. She yelps, and before he knows it, her can feel her hands around his arm, tight, her body pressed against his.
“No, please.” She whimpers, voice tiny. He can feel her trembling, her forehead pressed against his shoulder. “Turn it back on. Please.”
He’s surprised with this reaction. He thought she was scared, but not that scared. Obediently he uses the spell again, creating another light in the otherwise pitch black forest. “I guess we’ll have to stick together then.”
He feels her nod, and he begins to walk. It’s strange to be this close to her—she seems so helpless and powerless. She always seems so smug and superior, laughing at others.
But wait.
She only laughs at him.
Come to think of it, he’s never seen her be mean to anyone else before. He furrows his brows, getting more and more annoyed. He’s never done anything to offend her before. She has no reason to be so cruel towards him.
“Hey,” he starts, though his eyes search around. Fang is sniffing the ground for signs of the unicorn. “Why are you always so mean to me?”
She shuffles, her head moving and he supposes her cheek is now pressed against his shoulder. Her body is warm, an inviting feeling in the chilling forest.
There’s a long pause of silence, and Sehun rolls his eyes. “Don’t tell me it’s something stupid like, ‘I just don’t like you’ or ‘your face annoys me,’ because I swear—”
“I’m sorry.” She whispers, and Sehun freezes in his tracks.
“…What?”
He tries to make out her features in the dark, and finds a pout on her lips, her cheeks puffed out almost cutely. “I said I’m sorry.”
Sehun is taken aback, not expecting that in the least. He expected a snarky, possibly stupid reason, not an apology. But still, he huffs, “Oh, what? You think a simple ‘I’m sorry’ will make everything better?”
“I didn’t—” She sighs. “I don’t hate you. Honest.”
“Right. I suppose you love me then. Is that why you try to crush my self-esteem every single waking moment?” He asks sarcastically. He never thought he would be able to talk to her like this before. It’s quite a bizarre experience.
“I—” She stutters out. “Fine. Don’t believe me.” To his surprise, she pulls away and stomps off, her form disappearing into the trees.
“Hey, wait up!” Sehun calls, running after her quickly, trying not to lose her. It would be terrible if they get separated. He finds her at the edge of a pond, sitting on the rocky ground with her legs tucked up against her chest. She looks unbelievably sad, pained, and he’s never seen such expressions on her before.
Perhaps he never tried to understand her.
He sighs, shifting his weight and wondering if he should go to her. Maybe he could sit down next to her and just talk. Like civilized people. Like friends even.
And then all his doubts are silenced when he sees something shifting in the darkness. Something even darker than the shadows.
His heart leaps to his throat, as he breaks into a run, screaming, “Get away! Run!”
Fang barks loudly, growling at what seems like nothing but Sehun knows better. She looks startled, scrambling up but she won’t make it. With a burst of energy, he jumps at her, pushing her away just as the Dementor reaches him.
Ice.
He felt ice in his very bones, clamping around him in an iron grip. He tries to move, but cannot. Everything around him fades into a white mist, fogging up his mind and he cannot think. He’s terrified, unable to even breathe.
Am I going to die?
“Look.” He hears a familiar voice in the distance—his. But not really his, this voice sounds smoother, deadlier. Through the mist he sees himself, his hair darker, eyes an endless void and a wide, malicious smile. The other Sehun holds out his arm, slowly rolling up his sleeve.
Sehun already knows what he will see.
The Dark Mark. The symbol of a snake coming out of the mouth of a skull tattooed permanently in his arm.
“Look,” the other Sehun says with a smile, caressing the mark. “Isn’t it beautiful?”
No. Sehun wants to yell, struggling with all his might against the Dementor’s hold on him, against the fears of his own mine. No!
“Expecto Patronum!”
Sehun gasps, feeling reality rush back to him. His wand is pointed at the Dementor, and a blinding white, gleaming wolf is in front of him, growling at the dark creature. In a flash, the wolf bounds, attacking the Dementor with its teeth and claws. The Dementor backs away immediately, blending back in with the dark forest.
The wolf stills, turning towards Sehun for a moment before it loses its shape and disappears as well, leaving everything pitch black.
“Sehun, Sehun!”
He groans, head spinning. When he opens his eyes, he finds himself in a large room…the Hospital Wing.
“Oh thank goodness.” A familiar voice breathes out in relief, and before he could blink, she has her arms wrapped around him tightly, her head pressed against the crook of his neck. “Thank goodness you’re alright.”
He’s baffled by this behavior, even more so when he feels his heart skip a beat. Awkwardly and shyly, he wraps his arms around her as well, pulling her close. “What…What happened?”
“You were attacked by a Dementor.” Madam Poppy Pomfrey answers, coming over to his hospital bed and letting out a small smile. Sehun feels her pull away instantly, her face slightly red afterwards as she sinks back into her seat. “I heard you used the Patronus Charm. Very admirable indeed—only Harry Potter was able to use that charm at such a young age. How did you know about it?”
“I—” He flushes. “I researched…you know, just in case.”
“Well it’s a good thing you did.” She says, handing him something. “Here, have some chocolate.”
He accepts it gratefully, popping it into his mouth and letting the sweetest take over his tastebuds. She looks at him with concerned eyes, and he manages to flash her a smile. “Don’t worry, I’m fine.”
“You saved me.” She whispers, tears glistening in her eyes. “Thank you. You almost died because of me.”
“You’re welcome.” He answers. He actually doesn’t remember much, since his body reacted on its own.
“When you were kissed by the Dementor…what did you see?” She asks softly, carefully. “When you were unconscious, you looked in pain. You looked terrified. Can you tell me?”
Sehun looks away, though he knows he can’t run away from his fear. He needs to face it head on, and perhaps telling someone might help with that. And for some reason, he doesn’t feel bothered to be telling her.
“I…” He starts, sighing. “Well, you know how my family are Slytherins, right?”
She nods.
“And Slytherins are often associated with Dark Magic or Lord Voldemort.” He lets out a lopsided smile, hoping he hasn’t offended her. He chokes out the next words. “I saw…I saw myself…with the Dark Mark. I’ve always been terrified that I would become a Dark Wizard. I don’t want that. So when I was put in Hufflepuff, it actually reassured me that I won’t ever become like that. Still…I can’t help but fear that maybe…maybe it will happen—”
“It won’t.” She cuts him off confidently. Then she looks down, brows furrowed and teeth sinking into her bottom lip. “I…I don’t hate you.”
“You said that already.”
She closes her eyes, taking a deep breath before whispering. “You were right. I love you.”
As soon as the words leave her lips, Sehun freezes. He stares at her with wide, shocked eyes, unable to believe what he heard. “What?”
She looks frustrated now, her hands clenched tightly into fists in her lap. “I love you. Two years ago…you saved me from a bully. I never thanked you for that.”
Sehun is absolutely speechless. “…So you decide to thank me and court me by also bullying me?”
She flushes, her lips pursing tightly. “I didn’t mean to! I don’t know why but I just couldn’t stop myself from saying all those things. Every time I see you I want to thank you and tell you how I really feel, but every time I open my mouth I end up saying the meanest things.” A tear falls from her eyes, shocking him. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I really…I really hate myself. I hate how I act in front of you. You must hate me so much.” She buries her face in her hands, a sob escaping her lips. “And yet you still saved me. I’m such an idiot.”
“Whoa, whoa.” Sehun tries to soothe her, tentatively placing a hand on her shoulder. “I…I don’t hate you either.”
She sniffs, raising her head from her hands, tears swimming in the corners of her eyes, threatening to spill. “Really?”
Sehun nods, repeating, “I don’t hate you.” And it’s true. He hated the fact that she was always mean to him, but despite hating the things she says to him, he doesn’t hate her. It’s strange, because only a few hours ago he would’ve said he hated her without hesitation. Yet when he saw her in danger, he couldn’t help but push her out of the way, regardless of the consequences he would face.
No, he doesn’t hate her at all.
“You were always mean to me.” Sehun starts slowly, and her lip wobbles as she nods, head hanging in shame. “You always hurt my feelings. But,” he lets out a small smile, pressing his forehead against her and he hears her let out a gasp, “I don’t hate you.”
And then he presses his lips to hers.
