Okay, I'm so tired of people not appreciating dorms in Harry's time in school.
So much of the Marauders' lore is built around their time in the dorm, and I get that this is not the case with Harry's generation because there isn't much attention given to it in the books, but just imagine
They spent just as much time in their dorm as the Marauders/the Marauder era girls did. Best believe so much of their friendship and so many memories were acquired and built in those rooms. It was similarly awkward in the first year for them. They similarly helped Harry with his nightmares. They probably all shared snacks, clothes, school supplies and argued on who took a shower so long that there was no more hot water left in the morning and they had to wait an another hour for it to heat up (I don't care that it's literally a wizard school, let me live my fantasy)
Hermione was probably more cautious in her dorm and then the girls helped her loosen up a little after the first year, and just imagine how many gossip/girl therapy sessions they had. And the first time that Hermione probably appreciated it fully is after the Yule ball, when the boys ruined her evening, and she was surprised to find how similar her thoughts and opinions were to the girls, and so they talked and ate sweets and made face masks the whole evening after that.
Come on you guys, appreciate the goddamn bonding tools that the dorms were
Genderfluid sirius experimentally taking a step up the stairs to the girls’ dorms and it doesn’t turn into a slide and she’s like “what the fuck what the fuck” and freaks out but keeps it to herself until a couple days later when he tries to show the other marauders saying “I can get up to the girls’ dorms somehow” “okay, pads, prove it” and then he tries to take a step up the stairs and it turns into a slide and he’s like “last Friday it worked I swear!!!”
Are the stairs to the girls dorms “No boys allowed” or “Only girls allowed”
Because there is a big difference. If boys aren’t allowed, are nonbinary people allowed? And where would nonbinary people even sleep. If the magic could tell if someone was a boy or a girl wouldn’t it be able to tell if you’re both or neither?
Would hogwarts change with the times? A third dorm? Or do you get to choose? Like “I’m more comfortable being in the girls dorms”
Or like the genderfluid Sirius Black headcanon, would they be able to go up the girls stairs one day but not the next?
Would Sirius use this to their advantage and go up the stairs to see what the magic thought about them that day?
I hate to think that it would be biological, I refuse to believe that.
So I have some friends who recently brought to my attention the staircases going up to the dorms... These are my thoughts on them.... Also please keep in mind this is my own personal opinion and hate is not wanted anon or otherwise. It's also going to be all over the place so I'm so sorry if I give people horrible flashbacks to school days of trauma.
After much consideration and discussion I have come to the conclusion that this has as much to do with the creator of the lore and what is canon and what is not as it does have to do with readers. We in the fandom have disowned JK Rowling simply because she has shown her transphobic nature and who knows what else. Even the stars of the films have called her out for being well, a butt.
I have noticed myself she is a very straight edged, transitional person who doesn't care much if at all for those in the LGBT+ community. We are all aware of this.
I think girls are allowed to be in the boys' dorms because traditionally girls are meant to be more trustworthy than boys right? It's all the girl's fault if something bad happens in society yes? So Hogwarts is making sure the girls have the choice of going into a boys' dorm or not right? This is why I think this is the best option from my personal perspective...
Animagi were also involved in the conversation. Animagi don't have fully human souls when they're in their form. They do tend to have animalistic tendencies, but there is still a bit of soul there. This is why Sirius was able to sneak into the Gryffindor boys' dormitory. Because he is also a male and also why Scabbers was allowed to stay for a good twelve years sleeping next to Ron. I don't know about Rita Skeeter because she was actually banned from the grounds and had to stay in animagi form. My take on it would be, she would still be allowed to be in the dorm because she's anatomically a girl and therefore can get into the dorm for boys. We all know the Mauraders could have done anything they could to prank Lily and Maureen at night. And they probably did try everything. Even animagi form. If that didn't work that leaves me with no conclusion but to say it's anatomical and also sexist.
This brings me to the community at last. The whole reason this conversation happened in the first place. I don't know much about it because all I am is an ally. But my take on trans people at Hogwarts they would have to sleep in the dorm that they were anatomically assigned at birth unless there was a charm that could be permanently put on by Professor McGonagall.... I would say the trans community at Hogwarts would be mad. Everyone else in the community would probably be fine. I will be the first to admit I don't know anything about the community at all. So I'm just going to focus on trans people because it goes with my point that girls are trusted more than boys and why this is the only plausible explanation to explain the plot hole that is the dorm staircases. I'm so sorry if I offend anyone in the community with this section of the post. This was the section I was most concerned about! I am an ally of the community so please don't hate me if I only focused on what I think I know! Please and thank you!
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk about the Hogwarts dormitory stairs! Remember, anon hate is not appreciated nor is it appropriate anywhere associated with my blog.
Do just like to say that something I completely ignore from the books is the fact that the boys can’t go up the girls’ dormitory. I feel like the gryffindor boys are responsible enough to know to not go up the girls’ dorms, just like the girls don’t go up theirs
