The Ballad of Petals and Scales
Part 1:
Once upon a merry thyme,
Where ancient pain is softened in rhyme,
In a far-off kingdom lived a humble tribe
Connected to nature, they had to thrive
The people were called the Hollow Clan,
With Lady Weiss ruling this land
Unfortunately, in the middle of her reign,
Came a Colored Death with food as its gain
This one was known as the Black Death
For the darkened flames from its breath
The Hollows fought this ghastly beast
But sadly, some fell victim to the feast
Then Lady Weiss wished for a shift
In the tide of war they drowned adrift
Then out of nowhere came Lord of the Lie,
Loki, with a game-changer in response to her cry
He offered her a way to fight off this foe
She accepted the deal, her reluctance was low
"Drink from the flower that shares your name,
Then you will have the power to end this game"
The young Lady did what he had instructed
Pretty soon, her threefold strength had now hardened
More into sixfold or ninefold or even tenfold
She headed straight to the field like a warrior of old
Fighting her opponent a bit more like a dragon
Pretty soon, the Black Death couldn't go on
To finish, the Lady came to its hot heart
And crushed it, while gaining scars from her dart
Yet it was all worth it in the end
As her people's cheering began to ascend
Another however as they were all unaware
Of the Loptr's eventually consequential dare
Part 2:
Yes, after the battle had been won
And the Death's wrath came undone,
The Hollows rejoiced their great Lady
And had a grand party cheery and merry
Yet, Loki, out of personal amusement,
Toldeth the clan with zero restrainment
"Why not mix the blackened ichors
With the edelweiss drink, though it's just a hunch.
I might be the Prince of Liars,
But I know Death blood really packs a punch."
The Lady shrugged and said, "Why not?
I bet it wouldn't hurt an awful lot."
The Hunter's Moon Festival had begun
And all the Hollows were having fun
The jubilee lasted straight through nightfall,
Until the Moon's song started to afflict all
Who feasted like wolves the Blight's accurseth blood
That's when things started to get odd
The Hollows' simple human forms
Began to go against their mortal norms
Their bodies soon had twisted and turned,
With scales, tails, and feathers, their skin had blistered
Soon, the afflicted clanspeople had shortly realized in a great panic,
Stuck in shades of alabaster and stygian, they became more draconic
The Hollows were furious and started to blame Loki
I meaneth who wouldn't? He started this, okee?
Even Lady Weiss herself felt stiffed
She wanted just victory, definitely not this
Luckily, this madness only happened at night
When the Big Orb itself was at its greatest height
While the gift had perks, the pack searched for a simple solution
A way to try and completely cure this sort of divine pollution
His joke aging fast, Loki soon complied,
Spoke with honesty, and never lied,
"Drink from the little pure flower called Edelweiss.
Take it soon, little Hollowwings, before the moon rises."
Weiss remembered taking this flower
And also felt the terror of its awesome power,
But desperate times called for desperate measures
And their salvation rested with these little treasures
Without haste, the Hollowwings did as he asked
That's when the curse had seemingly passed
Sadly, Loki told them its purity crafted good glamour
They didn't care, harvested new ones with endeavor
A new skill had been placed upon the Hollowwing Tribe
Gardening to appease the curse with many a floral bribe
Soon, things went back to kinda normal in Weiss' land,
But she had a dream one night, too weird to understand
She dreamt that she was in a much different form
Flying around the earth instead of sleeping in her dorm
Her skin was obsidian, almost like the Sable Death,
But was smaller and aquatic like a fish in a big depth
She soon woke up at sunrise and though the vision went by,
She scryed through a Night Fury, a simple gal named Lorelei
Part 3:
The scrying happened every night
Whenever the moon was shining bright
Eventually, the Fury's world was seen by the Lady
And pretty soon, the Lady's was seen by the Fury
Then one evening, in a forested place,
The maidens met each other face-to-face
One was curious about the other,
For dragons like them, there wasn't another
While the link they shared was built on tethers,
Weiss and Lorelei became bound like sisters
They frolicked and flew, but only in secret,
When no-one on their sides that was awake was left
Soon, that truth came out of their twilight
And right to the center of the public light
Thankfully, as many the tribe came to terms with their curse,
The Hollows befriended the Furies, then most dragons, better or worse
They linked together, at least a Hollow shared some form
Living shells powered from fire to storm
But a few years later on after Weiss' reign,
Another gift came to her pack and it was insane
"Only a bite out of sheer force of will
Can allow you to grant the mortals your fill"
Some Hollows wanted to share this apparent blessing
Others though saw the act as utterly obscene
Nevertheless, that pack of a mighty some
Unleashed themselves from Gaul to Albion
Luckily, there were less of these feathered devils
For a scaly schism came and cleansed all the evils
Still, that rampage, the infection that once was spreading,
Beget the dreaded myth of the infamous Lycanwing...
Parts 1-3 can be read on my DA. While this poem doesn't fully explain why Auggie has Lycanwing powers, my guess is that since he is of Weiss' bloodline through his (estranged) father, Eret, he's a purebred via head trauma. Hence, the whole "Child of Weiss" and all that.
