3, 5, 12, for the book ask thing
3. What were your top five books of the year?
Oo! Easy!
1. Hijab Butch Blues was my absolute favourite read this year and I want all my friends to read it so we can talk about it!
2. The Deep really cemented me as a River’s Solomon fan. It was the first book I read this year and it was such a strong start.
3. The Traitor Baru Cormorant kept popping up as a recommendation after I read the locked tomb series and I’m glad I gave it a try.
4. When We Were Birds was an absolute delight! And the fact that the author was a teacher at my high school that I had a huge crush on was only incidental.
5. Paul Takes the Form of A Mortal Girl was strange and sexy and sad and it’s one of those books that I look forward to revisiting again and again as I change and grow.
6. Bonus! Ministry for the Future was so inspiring and pulled me out of a reading funk after a shitty book I didn’t finish.
5. What genre did you read the most of?
Easily speculative fiction. It’s my bread and butter
12. Any books that disappointed you?
A Long Way To A Small Angry Planet. I couldn’t even finish it. I’ll share my tiny review below—
ALWTASAP should hace been a banger! Instead the author chose the most boring sitcom style, episodic narrative that followed each character through minor conflicts as they make their way to a big job. I kept listening because my brain hurts and I can’t stand the silence. But it got returned and I won’t be renewing the loan. The next book a picked up reminded me what it’s like to be excited about a book I’m reading. I did not experience this excitement at any point of my listening experience for this book.
