Marina sighs softly, mind drifting from the books and parchment in front of her as she looks up to the dwindling light of the candle in front of her. She’ll be needing another one soon. Gently pooling her mana to a single finger, the apprentice lifts a finger holding it just so to catch a drip of wax as it falls down the candle where Marina watches it immediately solidify upon her icy fingertip with a small triumphant smile.

Cautiously gathering a little more mana and concentration, she turns her attention to the dancing flame, encasing it in an icy bubble the size of a small tomato. The light sputters as melting ice drips onto it, then dies as she waves the spell away once more.

“Hasn’t anyone ever told you it’s dangerous to play with fire,” comes a whisper from her right.

“I’m not-” Marina protests, turning to a chuckling Anders. Her fire spells are weak at best. Not for lack of trying, mind, but it seems fire, unlike the young boy beside her, simply isn’t her element.

“Not what I meant,” Anders replies, shrugging towards the corner where a young Templar suddenly busies himself with looking anywhere else.

Hmm, maybe keep firmly in mind that the Ex has her own reasons for doing things? And also, that there was something genuine between her and Cullen to start with? One of the biggest issues with the Bitchy Other Woman is that she's portrayed as Shallow Bitch, and the audience is left wondering why she was ever with the male character anyway. Oh, and maybe if the reason they broke up was more of a mutual issue, or she had issues with Cullen herself as well.

Also: if for whatever reason she's after Cullen to get back together, or causing trouble, maybe the story can also show that it'd be bad for HER. and she needs to also move on. instead of 'muahah gonna cause trouble just cause'

you could portray her in a sympathetic light?? keep her in but show that one major factor was cullen's issues? civil/cordial exes?

My main goal is to portray that the relationship did not work because they just weren’t right for each other and that they’re both at fault with certain things. 

The main worry was it was going to be written in Cullen and Imryll’s POV (switches between chapters) and that prevents me from portraying the ex in a neutral light. But I got some advice to do flashbacks because I could do that neutral and be able to show the past relationship in a non-biased perspective. 

Cullen and Evelyn (generic name placeholder atm), without spoiling anything pretty much got together under the wrong circumstances and neither of them had the emotional capacity to be in a relationship with each other.

Listen. Have you ever had birch beer? It is amazing. I say skip this birch syrup in tea nonsense and go straight for the pure unadulterated sugar drink. It's more honest.
