“The Up-Side of Down” was inspired by a 2009 assault and battery that hospitalized Carini with multiple facial fractures, severe eye trauma, and a concussion. Carini’s signature icon, which he saw flashing in his head during his concussive state, is a key repeating element in this series that represents life growing from death and discovering the positives in negatives.

Featured: King Nothing And The Discovery Of The Lost Venus (For SAMO). This painting is a love story and homage to Basquiat (can you spot the crown?) and the many historical paintings of Venus that came before it. I was recently asked to describe my work, to which I responded..."Imagine the love child of van Gogh and Basquiat"-

Cuando uno se sube al tren

Usualmente sabes a donde vas,

Pero no lo que te espera más allá

Te puede tocar un tren veloz y directo

O también uno con escalas y con peso muerto

Pero eso depende en como lo veas

Si parte del paisaje o resignándote a lo que pase

Si te enamoras en el camino, será el destino?

O una pérdida de tiempo para el futuro?

Cómo saber distinguir entre lo que quieres y lo que necesitas porque te hace bien?

Cómo colmar la tentación de algo nuevo, si a cambio debes dejar el nido hogareño?

Cómo saber si es un llamado de aventura o un grito de locura?

Hasta donde es amor y hasta cuando hay cordura?

Si solo se vive una vez, porque dudar de las verdades que se te revelan a flor de piel, las que te miran a los ojos y te dejan sabor a miel.

Porque somos tan complicados, los humanos.

Porque no nos hicieron más simples, como los perros, que no dudan jamás en hacerte saber cuanto te extrañaron, cuanto te aman y su lealtad que nunca pasa de moda.
