"As the title states, the Arch AUR has been hit by a huge malware infection campaign over the last couple of days. There's an earlier post referring to alvr. That's not the only package it's hundreds of them, many of them Aur packages average people would install like apple-music-desktop.
I don't have the full details of the scope of the malware campaign. I know it's a credential stealer so it steals ssh keys and browser login info and apparently has rootkit potential.
This was widespread and targeted orphaned packages. Aur for some reason allows other people to take over existing projects.
The bottom line is if you used the aur over the last couple of days you may have been infected and the problem with taking over orphaned packages I believe remains. I personally would not use the Aur for the foreseeable future, and ideally not at all. It's a security risk."
There is a script that you can run on your machine to detect if you have a package that is known to have been infected which you can view here. I have also linked the subreddit post here.
Just download it, make it executable and run the script with sudo and let it run, it will tell you what it found once it's complete.
⚠️ Also obligatory don't blindly trust random scripts on the Internet disclaimer ⚠️

I made a Radio!
I am teaching myself robotics and the first lesson I figured I'd learn is soldering.
Bought a small soldering kit on Amazon and put this together
The problems I had were these damn wires being finnicky about attaching, the battery compartment not wanting to fit right, and my back killing me afterward but it all came together in the end.
My relationship with my Jellyfin Server is to only add things to it and maybe actually use it to stream media occasionally. I guess sometimes its more about the journey then the destination
Come on a journey with me to set up my own personal cloud storage without knowing a damn thing about anything.
I watched this video and I got inspired. Fuck apple and google and microsoft — this is right up my alley. I recently had a pretty severe mental breakdown, took half a week off work, and received one of the worst haircuts of my entire life to date, so I am in the perfect headspace to embark on this quest for existential affirmation. Time to pull out my external hard drive collection and get to work.
One thing about me is I have MONUMENTAL hubris regarding anything DIY. Up to this point it has been mainly confined to small house repairs and experimental home cooking but why not expand into fucking around with IT? There’s no time like the present (especially this present). No, my disastrous 2-week doorknob replacement quest will not discourage me. My bathroom now has a doorknob and it even functions. I triumphed. How hard could this be? Worst case scenario i mess up one of my backup drives and I start again. LET’S GO.
So step one was acquiring An Computer. I purchased a refurbished HP ProDesk 600 G5 with an intel i3 9100 processor, 16GB RAM and 256 SSD storage for $280AUD and waited by the door for 2 days PATIENTLY like Santa would personally hand deliver it. And she arrived!
Ok that’s a lot bigger than I expected. I was so busy checking the specs i did not check the dimensions and DEFINITELY expected something more along the lines of a Elitedesk mini. NO MATTER. We will find a home for her.
Step 2: connect the monitor.
Ok,,,,,, the usb-c port doesn't support display output. I’ll just hook up the HDMI cable then—
Ok. Right. Displayport only. It’s fine it’s Thursday afternoon and Jaycar is still open for 3 more hours. Into the real world we go...
Adaptor acquired.
She lives!
Next step is to get windows11 the FUCK out of my beautiful girl’s guts and soul.
I have opted to use CasaOS instead of ZimaOS which means... Linux first! Yay! If that means nothing to you don't worry it meant nothing to me until an hour ago either. I don’t know what I’m doing but there are instructions so I will be fine.
However my main computer is a MacBook Pro and none of the instructions are for macos so we GO TO the forums. And youtube. If anyone else is trying to set up a linux installation drive from an apple product, these were the most helpful instructions I found:
DO NOT SKIP THE CHECKS. The first download I tried did Not Pass. Do I comprehend the consequences of installing it anyway? No. But the Professionals told me to delete it and try again so that’s what we do babEy.
Once I managed to download a non-sketchy file I popped it on a spare 16gb thumb drive — for this one the linux mint installation guide was perfectly sufficient for mac. Success!
No more photos but suffice it to say I have now SUCCESSFULLY installed and booted my new baby computer on Linux Mint Cinnamon. SHE LIVES!!!
And that's enough learning for today. Gonna calm down a little with some wine and my very favourite hobby Cleaning and Organising, by which I mean sorting out one of my hard drives to be the very first storage system for this glorious beast.
