hey just a tip. if you want a streaming service-like set up for your ("legally acquired") media, DON'T use jellyfin to host it. And ESPECIALLY don't use it with kodi to have more power to theme and change the feel of it. I would hate it if you did that. That would be terrible. Wink Wonk.
With netflix raising their prices again, I just want to state that it's actually shockingly easy to run yourself a home media server. All you really need is an old computer, a decently sized hard drive and some time and you can have one set up within a day.
Been doing it for years, and i've upgraded my setup to use a dedicated mini-PC, a 8TB and a 4TB external drive. And I can watch any movies or TV shows without giving a big company a single penny.
I LOVE SELFHOSTING.
I HATE BEING RELIENT ON BIG CORPORATIONS IN ORDER TO RUN MY LIFE ONLY FOR THEM TO STEAL AND SELL MY DATA.
Just a few cool programs I use!!!
Glance - A really good but imo tedious dashboard to set up, it is worth the work though when it's all done, I just recommend snb connecting to your server and using a coding software to edit the configuration rather than what I did 😭😭😭
Jellyfin - Self-hosted Netflix Alternative
Immich - Self-hosted Google Images Alternative
Qbittorrent - Torrent Downlader for my Arr Stack (Search it up if your curious :3)
AudioBookShelf - Audio Book/Podcast Player for your downloaded audio books and podcasts
I need to get more and if someone has a recommendation please drop it below I'd be so cool and so poggers to hear about more programs to run!!!
Best News Ever, I just discovered that I unintentionally was apart of a hobby called self hosting. Which I am using a laptop for streaming my movies and TV shows.
Building a Locally Hosted Media Server: A Mini-Series
I’m planning to create a mini-series focused on educating the general public about how to establish, maintain, and host their own personal media server. And remember, kids, piracy is bad 😆
Building a Production-Grade Private Netflix with Jellyfin
Let's be brutally honest about self-hosted media servers. Running Jellyfin on a Raspberry Pi or an old laptop is fine if you are the only one watching 1080p movies locally.
But what happens when you share your server with 5 friends? What happens when you try to stream a 50GB 4K movie while traveling on mobile data?
Your hardware will choke. The stream will buffer endlessly. And your home internet's upload speed will bottleneck everyone.
You need a true Production-Grade Netflix Alternative. In our latest ServerMO engineering blueprint, we bypass the beginner stuff and teach you the SysAdmin way to deploy Jellyfin securely on an Ubuntu 24.04 Dedicated Server.
The SysAdmin Playbook:
⚡ The RAM Disk Hack: We map a /transcode directory to tmpfs in Docker. This forces transcoding caches into RAM, saving your SSD from burning out.
🎥 Solving GPU Permissions: Most tutorials fail here. We show you exactly how to find your Linux render group ID (getent group render) and pass your NVIDIA or Intel GPU into the container for flawless 4K-to-mobile compression.
🔒 Enterprise Nginx Routing: Never stream over plain HTTP. We provide the exact Nginx config to disable buffering (proxy_buffering off;), enable WebSockets, and secure everything with Certbot SSL.
🚀 1Gbps Symmetric Power: Ditch the home internet upload limits. A ServerMO Bare Metal server provides the unshared network and compute resources needed for multiple remote users.
Say goodbye to endless loading screens and build your streaming empire the right way. 🏢

Plex + Sonarr + Radarr + NZBGet
I promise one day I will do a full breakdown of my setup but for anyone that wants to know a good setup and is willing to research how to set it up for themselves this is what I recommend. Plex - The media server client
Sonarr - TV show downloads
Radarr - Movie downloads
NZBGet - Download Client
Indexs - think piratebay
Sonarr and Radarr allow you have a list of shows and movies you want. The minute they are available online to download it will automatically download them. From there it will move the download to the correct folder. From there plex will pickup the show or movie and then it is available on all your plex apps. Sonarr and Radarr works with torrent clients and indexers too. I prefer newsgroups because news groups are stored on 100s of servers meaning they rarely ever get deleted. There is no "peer" downloads etc.
