something even acclaimed lore historians miss in Homestuck:

the other alpha trolls are implied to know their form of sign language ("mimes"), it's just considered difficult to interpret because it's using memes as a form of communication

Meulin signed to Horuss and he only couldn't understand bits of it (she might sign fast, with her "mimes incoming" warning when getting excited, but there's not much grounding for that)

one time Meenah quotes Meulin's signs, she specifically said "in the immortal gestured hand words of the late great Meulin Lejion" when quoting her, even though Meulin has verbally said what was quoted, because Meenah knows what she's signing (she just can't understand it "half the time")

in their standards, it's considered a shitty form of communication, because it's a joke, it's "mimes", to be a clowny pun for "memes", Meenah also constantly gripes about how much she hates the language because of this

Aranea states that Kurloz signed to her and she didn't understand because he's intentionally misdirecting her with his "penchant for riddles" and "ambiguous mimes" rather than real answers

both Mituna and Meenah used a mime once individually- there was no use to make whole signing sprites for that one-off nod to their version of sign language (one of which is an easy accidental skip)

Meenah says "he obviously won't say a thing to me" while Cronus gets "not a peep" from Kurloz, because Kurloz hates them and just plain refuses to sign to either of them at all, but it's never stated why (likely multiple things piled up without anything explicitly confirmed, maybe a religious-centered grudge, the fact Meenah tried to kill Meulin at least twice and Cronus continuously harassing Mituna, and potentially a situation reflecting Alternian history like it does for other dancestors, might be more funny if he just really hated sea dwellers though lol)

Horuss describes Meulin's signs as "moderately discernible", how he describes it makes me think she signs fast, but regardless of that, he understands it enough to get the gist of what she's saying to him

Meenah didn't necessarily need to mention that it's specifically the "hand gestured words" Meulin has said (since Meulin has verbally said the phrase before), yet did here

Meenah also has the above to say about their form of sign language, since it's meme gifs ("mimes")

I also feel like people kind of just forget Meenah's a bit of an ass, even if for comedic purposes, when it comes to the topic of deafness and muteness paired with their alien form of sign language

Meulin relies on Oralism to communicate with most of her friends, not because they don't know/understand the language, but because it's not as easy to use compared to if it was like our sign language- she and Kurloz rely on it (especially at the beginning because it would take time for a newly deaf person to learn Oralism), so they're naturally able to "sign memes to each other all day"

Aranea has talked to Kurloz since his own incident (that left him mute), but found it difficult to understand him both with his ambiguous mimes and his penchant for riddles

Mituna using a mime, which I feel is especially important to point out because the fandom likes to act like he "wouldn't have the mental capacity for it", but also Meenah's response shows she knows what he signed/"mimed"

I find these bits funny with the "nobody but Meulin and Kurloz know sign language" misinterpretation because what? are the sea dwellers expecting the guy with a stitched up mouth to verbally speak to them? no, they do know sign language but Kurloz is giving them nothing, head shakes, shrugs, and the middle finger at best
