How has Covid-19 changed the scope of Work from Home
The pandemic has taught us that work, in any form and domain, can continue even without physical contact. With booming technology, we have been able to adapt to this all-new situation and managed to stay afloat. ‘Work from Home’ has taken a new meaning after the outbreak of Covid 19, and employers have to understand the implications it brings along with it. Work from Home is no longer a temporary arrangement that employees resort to for managing work with personal commitments. With the pandemic putting a curb on all physical activities, work has also transitioned from offices to the home. Thus, work from home has emerged as a permanent working style and is probably here to stay.
In the light of the pandemic, the International Labor Organization has defined Work from Home as a working arrangement wherein the employee carries out all his official responsibilities while staying at home. The arrangement requires full support from the employee’s end as well, in terms of providing information and communications technology. Work From Home is slightly different from telecommuting or teleworking as it encompasses a more permanent work arrangement. Also, under the new Work From Home regime, the employees would not be commuting for work.
As per the ILO’s guide, employers are liable to provide DSE assessments and the following services to their employees when they work from home after COVID-19:
· Employers should undertake a Work from Home risk assessment before they ask their employees to permanently work from home. Not all jobs are fit to be performed outside the office premises. Thus, employers should weigh the risks associated with the job before going ahead with a complete WFH arrangement.
· Employers should provide temporary working from home guidance to their employees. It involves a homeworker DSE assessment and then setting up a DSE workstation for employees. It would ensure that employees stay productive and do not have to struggle with the necessities. They should also reimburse any productivity expenses that employers accrue while working from home.
· Employers should provide the required tools and technology that the employees require for work.
· Employers are also liable for any accidents or damages that might occur while the employee is working from home.
Along with employers, employees are also liable to cooperate during WFH, maintaining a secure and healthy work environment. As mentioned before, Work from Home is no longer a voluntary work arrangement but has been mandated as a public health measure.
Online Homeworker Assessments
With the COVID-19 outbreak, work from home is the “new normal”. Due to this rapidity of the change, temporary home workers will likely be working from sofas, dining tables, beds, kitchen stools, and other workspaces. Such poorly arranged workstations can increase the injury risks associated with computer work — eyestrain, repetitive strain injury (RSI), back, and neck injuries.
Advice for Temporary Home Workers
Posture Group has created a realistic approach to dealing with this risk. We have advised the organizations using a 3D training video with multiple screen configuration options which helps employees to use their own supports and home equipment to set up their desk, chair, and any other equipment to achieve a comfortable working position.
Staff will be guided and informed on how to organise their own setup and fix the issues. Issue management is completely customisable so that issue managers at the company, or the employees themselves, can manage any generated issues.
