I used to think I had to "get good to get God," that I had to earn it and keep earning it. I was a slave to the hustle of faith. So I'd keep my prayers light. Safe. Proper. I'd hide the parts of me that weren't shiny and successful, holy and good. I'd hide my questions and shackles and shame. Then I came to know the truth- you can't hide anything from God AND there's no need to hide. God sees it all AND welcomes us just the same. All can be opened to the Light and made new. So dear ones, come as you are. Bring it all and bare it all. Come with God to the wide, clean wilderness of prayer. An excerpt of a note to a dear friend:
“Don’t neglect how you feel, you need to be honest with yourself first. Whatever that honesty is, I will honor that but it has to resonate and be true to you first more than anyone else in this world. XYZ, that is all that matters to me - for you to be honest with yourself. Because by being honest with yourself first, you are respecting the relationships and friendships you have with everyone else in your life. And if being honest with yourself is what you do, and however that may manifest after Saturday, I will be very happy for you and you have my blessings as your friend... I want you to be emotionally healthy- decisions don’t just come with rationale, they’re underpinned by deep emotions that often reveal how God has wired you.
