Why Europe's Insecticide Ban Is Big News for Bees

Neonicotinoids, or neonics, will be banned for outdoor use in Europe thanks to environmental concerns.

The European Union has banned the outdoor use of “neonic” pesticides (also known as neonicotinoids) in order to mitigate their impact on bees and other pollinators. Neonics affect the nervous system of invertebrates and while their greatest impact is on beneficial insect populations, they have also been implicated in hurting populations of insect-eating birds and bats.

Hopefully, this move will lead to other countries also limiting their neonic use. The United States EPA has temporarily stopped approving new neonic uses while they investigate the potential harms of these chemicals.

This is a huge step in the fight to protect vital pollinators, which are important not only for the environment but also for human food security.
