This journey started in something that was fractured. For some, this goes back to their parent and theirs, but for some, this is about the idea of happiness and family you've been chasing all this time. The feeling you've been trying to use to bury all that hurt in your chest, the feeling of loneliness. You had no choice but to be strong. Key word this is not about a man this is about me..... This pile's truth is about commitments; you are in the midst of a perfect storm, take heed before you lose your head. You're attached to so many of the things at this time, most importantly, this is about the perception you have about the things you manifest. You are surrounded by fake people and others that show love and adoration with ulterior motives; it's about time you see through the rose colored glasses broken.  You have been warned, and you did not listen, so now things are about to show up in a new way; this time, you will be stopped. Whatever isn't serving you will be brought to an end; all these things around you bringing this frequency of chaos will be leaving your life. There is about to be a tower point in your life following this truth that is unavoidable; it's best to face the music at this time. This situation involves your past or a behavior stemming from childhood on. It's a trigger that brings something almost naive within you; you have been trying to make sense of it all with no real tools. nits time to regulate your emotions and get your life together at this time. You're being called because you've suffered in silence in many ways. You keep your cards close; typically, when you try to open up, it ends in confusion and chaos. This truth for you is coming from discernment, a lesson to truly see what you attract, despite who you are. Remain authentic because other perception of you is not the truth; it's their abundance of thoughts, nothing more. Your truth is that a lot of people don't know what to do with you, so they just fake it and try, but in the wrong way. Some wear masks, and others hide in the dark. Funny enough, you're not afraid of showing all sides of yourself to the world. Still, through your anxiety, you learn to trust and to see past the agony of truth to enlightenment.  This pile could very well hear about some shit said behind your back or a conflict that you may or may not have been involved you. Moving through life is an experience everyone can relate to. But we all walk different paths, at different weights, from different starts - all in discovery of The Journey. Many of us come from spirituality wrapped into what I like to call ideology and rules - Religion. Its covenant and discipline has kept many of us warm in a cold world. Stepping outside of that lets explore practicing spirituality in a raw form.

I am a Hoodoo Practitioner, Hoodoo is an African American closed ancestral practice - CLOSED PRACTICE will be carelessly taught or displayed. I have made things beginner friendly for everyone ready to flow towards spiritual practice. That being said I work things and learned things traditional and based on my own cultural connections.

The first skills you need to learn on this journey that are vital comes down to three things.

Protection

Cleansing

Self Mastery

Spirituality is mystical and can be fanatical but its a lot more practical and makes sense....Its not common but you need to use that sense in order to protect and ground yourself in any spiritual practice no matter how complex.

SELF MASTERY

We'd be fools if I told you to run to the Botanica and gather supplies without the real meaning of work being highlighted here. I'm sure some of us are familiar with the body being referenced as a beacon, temple or even vessel. Those concepts stem from a even deeper meaning of life - interconnectedness. You are the source and the way any ancestor or message has to come through you. Ive talked about this before, in my SELF post.

"It all starts with SELF. The health and wellness of self. Addressing your trauma, re-raising your self and inner child, being present in your body, accepting and working on weaknesses and flaws, shadow work, most importantly therapy."

You need to know yourself, You need to know what your own energy is - what it feels like. You can't talk about hexes or calling in energy if you cannot decipher. The key to learning and all the answers are truly within you. You experiences even will act as roadmaps to the truth. You most likely have the solution discovered or not. Believe it or not self development requires community and elders. You need to be applying wisdom but taking it in as well. Find elders and don't see limitations, ask your spirits or higher power to reveal the path to some or give you clues to find one. Not everything is gonna be set up the same way

This is so important to be able to accept and receive the enlightenment along the journey. The universe always offers a chance for self mastery, the development starts once you answer the call for greater.

Spiritual working and practice is not a game. This is not a game of go big or go home. Playing even in your own energy can cross yourself up. Take a sobering look at your reality and the spirituality you want to meet that reality. Be very honest because this path cannot be built on lies, even the ones you tell yourself.

DIVINATION - SPIRITUAL INFORMATION GATHERING - COMMUNICATION WITH HIGHER POWER, SPIRITS, ANCESTORS - MESSAGES.

This is the part where you learn your divination skills to communicate with your higher power and spirits. You need to be always walking the journey with your ancestors to learn whats needed for you. Its important to not have a wandering green eye, wait patiently for your turn to do whats necessary. Spiritual Prices must be paid - energy does not come from free and its time to do the self work if you cannot understand that. You are not a superhero and this is not a movie, you gifts are not obligated to you they are blessed. Do not start a transactional relationship with your spirituality - same concept for ancestors.

WHAT YOU GET BACK IS WHAT YOU PUT IN.

People like to gloss over this divination is essential to any one practicing, simply because how the hell are you gonna know what your doing. Come correct to your spirits, do not ask for help with the energy of entitlement. If you half ass it then you wont be able to do what you need to do regardless. Faith without work is dead. For real spiritual movement you cannot fake or bypass putting more than just intention into work especially deeper ones.

DECOLONIZE - DECONSTRUCT - DIVINE

Learn your culture so you can discover your roots. Become lead to your purpose, so that your spirituality is more genuine and tailored. Focus your energy on becoming a student of life because thats what you are. Most of us started this journey by starting over. ]

Learn your spiritual tools - start with the natural ones. Herbs, Cleansing Tools, what's the basics like salt, don't jump into everything because everything isn't for you.

Don't get to much ego trying to do what others do. Don't try to just pick up spiritual practices and tools without guidance.

Know the meaning of faith in your life, find an unmovable energy of hope.

DECOLONIZE - DECONSTRUCT - DIVINE , all are very necessary parts of your journey. In order to stay protected and be prosperous in spirituality you need to open you mind, heart and body to things that may have been stigmatized or even demonized.

You have to move with a knowing unmoved by fear, I personally this week was wrongfully accused of being a witch - I am a spiritualist and in the historical connotation and previous usage of that word on my ancestors. I don't like it at all especially when used in that way. Many people don't want to understand what's different and we are black plus the people who read this too, even if your not we have a place in this world of oppression and privilege - those need to be acknowledged as well.

Notice how at no point yet or so far I am discussing how to petition or work with ancestors. because starting this journey means you start with what you know and you never should just start with ancestors. That is dangerous and deeper game to play. They aren't your toy or yours, they were people and are people just as much on the pother side elevated or not. Their problems and beliefs remain and part of that work is taking on a duty that you must understand within yourself first. For your own protection and safety.

Accept now that spirituality is logical, historical and scientific - your bullshit can be planted with the flowers of spirituality, your shit isn't sweet don't try to make it. Don't be pushing feminism and demonizing sex workers and then calling yourself a light worker. get realistic about this world and your place in it. Grow - its simple just open your mind and close your mouth.

Start slow, be patient and kind to yourself - a path is not walked with one footstep. Encourage yourself - bring positivity and light even in darkness. See yourself above it all and know that you'll make it through. Fall in love with yourself.

Never just rush into anything or pick up anything including minor workings without thorough discernment and guidance from a higher power. If your ancestors or spiritual guidance (divination especially) haven't given you the go ahead then there is nothing to do but wait and listen.

You are your greatest SPIRITUAL TOOL start with yourself and with your roots not with tools. Start with were you come from, use what you have and always follow what you know. Protect and Consecrate your energy especially around your head. carry yourself in protection and use all your intuition and discernment.

CLEANSING

Cleansing work is for removing, clarifying and drawing in energies into or out of your life. It has degrees and lives on a spectrum of potency. This is your only line of defense to energies that aren't pure to your soul, to remedy the darkness that sometimes obscures the light. Its a necessity for practicing any spiritual practice, using any spiritual tool, engaging in any spiritual working, and for spiritual hygiene.

The act of cleansing is contentious, it resounds the message that spirituality makes sense because as you must shower/bathe to remain clean you must do the same spiritually and even emotionally. Where ever energy lies it cannot be created and destroyed only changed.

Alot of people misuse words in spirituality, JUSTICE (KARMA), EVIL EYE, HEX, CURSE, CROSSING, JINX. Though in a similar category these are not the same things. Knowing that someone including yourself can step into the balance of dark and light is important. No one is out to get you and even if you have enemies that is not a call to fear.

EVIL EYE - can be set with or without intention, the persons thoughts and energy that is "sent" to you usually blocks or causes issues depending on what the energy was sent to and how intent the sender is. Bad or Negative energy.

JUSTICE (KARMA) - Not the sacred already established kind of karma its more justice base. The modern concept of what you wish for me I wish for you. Balance - when someone tries to unjustly tip the balance in your life. People trying to trap or bind you to certain paths or roads that do not serve you. This could be spiritual warfare in terms of the law also. Usually bestowed by a higher power, angels and forces of nature. KARMIC BALANCE - No energy goes unpaid and no stone is left unturned the truth will always be revealed.

CURSE - Effects lineage and blood relatives, potent and usually dangerous working. This is a sign or spiritual warfare on a deep level. This can carry in the bloodline for generations, is passed down the line. Work to cause a specific type of harm to a person. Effects wide areas of life, Money, Relationships, Happiness - whatever it is the curse will treat that area as a disease and white blood cell dynamic. Depending on the caster needs special working and should absolutely be confirmed by divination.

CROSSING - Is when someone is try to cross up your life, they want something to end or be thwarted. If your life is a bunch of paths this crossing energy is all about putting you on the path of no return to a path that crosses your blessings and highest good. Meant to cause harm and bad luck. Usually intentional but yes you can cross yourself up. Its a fixed problem and you need to uncross and cut and clear the energy in order to remove.

JINX - Mainly a souring of luck, a jinx is opposition to luck. Its exactly as its sound and it can be laid intentionally or unintentionally. Easily picked up without protection.

HEX - Usually sent and based on working something in, coming in or leaving your life. Its a set intention and its similar to a cross. Hexing is usually on a situation or event also, for example hexing your studies so you don't graduate and get a good job. Hexing is a work that requires a lot more than just a set intention its potent and intentional whether it was meant to be a spell or not. This could reference someone trying to jinx you but they have strong energy, like wishing death or bad experiences to a certain degree. This is typically performed through working or rituals but never underestimate energy.

Its a good bit of y'all that cross yourself up, thoughts and mindset is blockage enough, your perspective has more power than others candles if you unlock that power. Knowing how herbs work and properties is great but when it comes to cleansing or any working for the matter - you need to know not just believe.

It may not be enemies it may have been you - another reason divination, discernment and self mastery are so important.

Hoodoo and Books

Hey everyone, my name is A'niya. I am a Hoodoo Practitioner, Astrologer, and Spiritual Creative. I have been practicing hoodoo for a while now, and started my own spiritual business as a practitioner. That being said, I want to use my space to delve into common misconceptions, options, and truths.

To be clear, this is from my stance as a hoodoo practitioner taught by elders.

Let me be clear, do not take anything in these books and just practice willy nilly, always research, divine, and double-check. Hoodoo and Spiritual Workings are not a joke or gimmick for any quick or unjustified workload, good or bad intentions.

What is Hoodoo?

Hoodoo is a closed ancestral practice cultivated in America during chattel slavery. Most certainly on the plantation after ADOS were integrating and being oppressed throughout society. A practice of healing, herbalism, conjure, rootwork, and alchemy, much more. It's practice rooted in survival, destruction, elevation, and renewal. It's a journey that is lifelong to be in practice with hoodoo; its elements become a lifestyle of cultivation. In hoodoo, we preserve and pass down the knowledge and wisdom that came before us. Hoodoo is survived by descendants and word of mouth; its sacred place in many lives is gifted by lineage. Not every person with hoodoo in their background is called to practice the work the same, if not at all. In hoodoo their is more than just different forms of magic; there are workers of preservation, philosophy, and gathering. Hoodoo revolves around God (Higher power), self, and the ancestral/family unit. Most practices inside hoodoo are derived to protect and elevate the line. 

Hoodoo Books

For disclaimer's sake, many elders in hoodoo have already taught, and the basis of hoodoo teaches that, in a closed practice, not much will be open to the public. Why do we have hoodoo books? One huge factor most forget when it comes to hoodoo practice is history, the one thing most of us are tied to without the golden ticket to hoodoo lineage. Most Afrcian Americas carry elements of hoodoo; its richness has fueled and expanded American and Southern history. We must preserve who we are, no matter what we practice, so that's one. Secondly, hoodoo was cultivated from the plantation, where most of our ancestors were banned from reading or participating in much organization or religion at all outside of Christianity. This is where hoodoo found its roots in books like the bible, and many books and texts from practitioners growing more open in modern times to teach the outlining history and cultivation of the practice. Practitioners and curious onlookers sought out hoodoo workers' books as outlets to come out to the world as practitioners. Most workers back in the day were colored, and weren't allowed or able to read. They would pay workers for information, but not all information was handled sacredly. Much was also told in the diea it would end up in the wrong hands, so things weren't told directly either. I want to point out that this practice has an element of secrecy and rickery to it for situations that many of our ancestors and we find ourselves in, forced to practice in protection rather than just openly put ourselves in scrutiny or danger. Many books are in the form of literature telling the life of rootworkers or projecting the life of a black person at that time, navigating spiritual and religious themes. Books are tools as well in this practice to learn the basics and explore the understandings that people have of our practice. Take certain books with a grain of salt; not every book is 100% accurate in detail and information. You may hear voodoo or certain mixed concepts in books that aren't historical or made by black people. Tread carefully and use discernment towards books; the information should be double-checked and researched carefully before you do anything like working or changes to lifestyle.

Disclaimer: This list will be changed and added to. These are tools ive learned from and have been pointed towards. Keep in mind that oral tradition is the best way to learn despite books great capacity to teach its concepts.

Books: 

The Bible: One of the oldest hoodoo books there is. One of the common and consistent tools in the practice. I'm sure you have heard people say that the bible is a spellbook of tales; it definitely is a spellbook. This sacred text isn't used in the same way as Christians in the practice, but it all depends on the type of hoodoo worker. The church and bible has close and historical ties to hoodoo practice. The bible is used to understand and explore life just the same. We do switch it up and add more spirituality and discipline in how the bible is worked throughout the daily life of hoodoo practitioners. This book contains many ways to work with scripture, herbs, rituals, and more. 

Family Books: This could be spellbooks, recipe books, or even herbalism notes. It could be anything about the hoodoo way; most of us commonly get Bibles passed down with messages and notes within them. Understands that hoodoo is practiced in many ways to conceal or be used in plain sight. These books are usually passed down from ancestors or elders in the family. They can conatin lineage based work or wisdom from before. There are ways our ancestors passed down their ways of practicing for us to pick up the torch. 

The Hoodoo Bible: Not every aspect of this one is concrete, but it's definitely solid. To be clear, Hoodoo is not voodoo or orisha work. Those are separate practices, and mixing practices in hoodoo is a big no-no, especially if it's not within your own line in the first place. We cans till acknowledge hoodoo origins and influences inside the practice itself. That being said, this book has some great information; at best, it helps you understand basic concepts and ways inside hoodoo practice. This book is also a history book of ancestral historical relevance. I personally think this book is informative and detailed; it has great knowledge and understanding. It has a lot of hoodoo principles outlined to learn the way things were and why they are today. Now this one is more mid-level advanced.

Stories of Rootworkers Hoodoo in the Mid-South: This book, so far, is delightful. It's more about the stories and lifestyles of hoodoo workers that make up our history, as well as spiritual tales. As someone who has been reading black hoodoo-esque literature. This book rings similar to many deep south novels, telling the story of black life in the south. This book is exactly as it sounds, it's filled with stories and historical telling of hoodoo figures and soulaan people down south, back in the day to now. It goes into rootworkers' stories of tales and remedies. Note that most stories like this should be taken with a grain of salt; it's a known fact that, despite their great knowledge, many rootworkers gave mixed information purposely to white observers and book makers. This book was created by a white man named Tony. Keep in mind that oral tradition is the best way to learn, despite books' great capacity to teach their concepts. 

Papa Jims's Herbal Magic Workbook: One of the few I adore, made clearly for a hoodoo worker...though it's always something with books nowadays. This is set for rootworking, and those learning such. It's a tool for learning how to use herbs for workings. Though a full book, I have noticed certain herbs aren't present. It lists its usages mainly with brief descriptions of the herbs' traits. This one has less general meaning and definition of properties. It's not a beginner tool, though it can be used to learn. The way it's written is designed for certain spiritual work associated with herbs. It also included pictures of some of the plants listed, which can help with fresh herbs. It's a beautiful book of hoodoo-based herbs, ones you may not find in the more beginner/novice books that tell the understanding. 

Papa Jim Magical Oil Book: This is a gem for any hoodoo worker to have. This book goes even deeper into advanced concepts of rootwork and herbalism. It is absolutely advanced in its teaching if you're able to understand how to truly work it. its goe sinto details about the workings and usage of the oil, brief yet informative descriptions of herbs used in workings, and ways certain oils are made and worked. This one is packed with alphabetical lists of all the information. It's not organized outside of that, but it's mixed with really great ways of working, not that you have to do anything exactly that way. Though a book of work its meant to show the usage and knowledge of the oil. 

Hoodoo, Herb, and Root magic: This is a gem for any hoodoo worker to have. This book goes even deeper into advanced concepts of rootwork and herbalism. It is absolutely advanced in its teaching if you're able to understand how to truly work it. It goes into details regarding the workings and usage of the oil, brief yet informative descriptions of herbs used in workings, and ways certain oils are made and worked. This one is packed with alphabetical lists of all the information. It’s not organized outside of that, but it's mixed with really great ways of working, not that you have to do anything exactly that way. Though a book of work, it's meant to show the usage and knowledge of the oil. 

Hoodoo Cleansing and Protection Magic: I like the way this one contained lots of information on the hoodoo regulars of cleansing, like washing down, using ammonia to clear anything harmful, and the aura. It is a great beginner tool for understanding how protection works in everyday life. It goes into detail explaining the principles and elements behind different forms of protection and cleansing. There's also information on how protection and cleansing can be compromised in everyday life. It's a beginner's 101 of moving through the energy of cleansing and protection. There is some mixed information, like most, so again, this is to understand the energy of cleansing and protection from a hoodoo-based lens; this book instructs confirmed gospel. 

Power of Psalms: This one is a favorite of mine. It has a great summary of Psalms and the different ways to work scripture to get things done. There is everything from healing sickness to daily prayers. It does a great job working as a prayer book as well. This book breaks down the prayer into sections to fully grasp the psalm's meaning and many uses. This book helps understand how to work psalms in your favor or someone else's favor.
