I don'r think you've been wasting your time with BNHA. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately this past year with JKR being the worst and trying to navigate between things that are worth saving in a work you love versus things that the creator and/or the story does that makes you feel gross. I think that, in the end, it comes down to what YOU feel comfortable with in accepting the story as yours. For me BNHA goes as far as the Joint Training arc before I make it mine. (1/2?)

Mainly because I just did not like the MLA or PLF arcs at all. I rarely see long term fics touch on them. But yes canon exists and so much of the time it sucks. But there are beautiful things to come out of it, like the stories you share. If you want to stop, then stop. But if these stories make you excited, then tell them. Do your own thing, you know? At least that's what I do and plan on doing. But I think the good here is the stories you want to tell. Should you continue to want to tell them.

I don't know if that helped at all! But fuck canon. She will always live on in my fics.

thanks, this was helpful. i think the issue was that midnight’s death damaged what little trust i had with the author. i had previously envisioned him as someone with good ideas, but whose vision had been put through the wringer and didn’t have the spine to stop it. midnight’s death really drove home for me the degree to which i am not only Not The Target Audience but also just plain Not Welcome in this story. it felt like this was a deliberate attempt to drive me out. but i don’t have to be driven out if i don’t want to.

it also helped a lot for me to find out that bnha is almost over, apparently. i can work on my fics without fear that something that happens two years and five arcs from now is going to retroactively taint it all. i can start planning how i’m going to FIX all this without worrying about needing to accommodate a plot point six arcs from now that requires someone i wanted to save to be dead. there also won’t be any more reveals that could possibly change plot points, like if dad for one was confirmed or jossed when i had it go a different way in my fic. if the story is over, i can figure out how to rewrite it without fear.

so, if you’re feeling down over midnight’s death, remember that while your feelings are valid, you don’t have to listen to canon if you don’t want to. the series is YOUR playground! do whatever you want! just remember to have fun!
