Statistical Breakdown of Skintone Variety in South Korean Gacha Games (July 2026)
calculated here, all percentages are rounded to two decimal places.
per wikipedia, "foreigners" make up only 5.3% of south korea's population, with half of these "foreign" residents being "chinese" [specifics unspecified]. unhelpfully, this figure includes koreans born outside of south korea as "foreign".
like all east asians, korean skintones naturally vary from very light to medium dark. the undertones are also diverse (as sometimes seen in the "warm" category).
being "korean" does not necessarily make someone light-skinned, just as being "foreign" to south korea does not necessarily make someone darker-skinned: the 5.3% figure is used here only as a point of comparison for how reflective each of these south korean games may be of their own, local, south korean playerbase.
disclaimer: i am mixed-chinese and vary from very light to olive, depending on the season. i am not korean and have never lived in korea.
KEY
[percentage] = the percentage of playable dark(ish)-skinned characters in-game as of july 2026
[~] is used to represent approximated, rather than certain, numerical ranges.
y/o = years old
characters = characters that are or will soon be playable, per each game's own release schedule
??? = dark-skinned but in inhuman shades or dark but not [human] skin
[??? characters are excluded from series tallies by default]
"tanned"/tanned? = could be light-skin with a tan, could be light-skin in misleading lighting, could even be an attempt at an actual brown! who knows? not me!
[skintones, especially "darker" shades, can appear very different depending on lighting and art style: that is why i include two estimates for series with too many "tanned"/"warm" characters]
olive/warm-skinned = naturally "tan" or bronzed skin, as is common in west asia/north africa, southern europe, central asia, south-east asia, some parts of oceania, and indigenous america.
brown-skinned = light to warm brown skin (or pinks trying to pass as such), as is common in east africa, north africa/west asia, southern europe, central asia, south asia, some ethnic groups in east asia, indigenous america, oceania/polynesia, and persons of mixed ethnicity.
dark brown-skinned = what westerners might actually consider "black" (not actually exclusive to those of african heritage: pops up throughout asia, oceania, and indigenous america too)
whitewashed = characters who are light-skinned despite being based on persons/cultures who were not (i have not investigated every game for this, just those i already had context for)

Horizon Walker Ranger
Closing the tears of reality in an enchanted forest of the Feywild isn't exactly how Patty planned on spending her days, yet a lifetime of travel and particularly spiteful Fey lord seem to say otherwise
My little Tabaxi that I've been playing in Novi's current campaign.

The Plane Truth
I'll never understand how a game like BG3 that's so littered with teleportation and interplanar travel didn't include the Horizon Walker subclass, but I'm glad that mods let me do so. My ranger is living up to her 5e self in ways she never could as a Gloom Stalker.
Bonus: Minthy trash-talking Lorroakan.
