Thursday Thoughts: Horrible Thoughts

I had a horrible thought the other day. I don’t want to say what it was. It was one of those moments where I recoiled from my own brain. “Wow,” I thought in reaction, “that was messed up! What am I thinking? I don’t want to act on that.”

Once upon a time, that moment would’ve completely ruined my day. I would’ve followed up that reaction with self-deprecation. “How could I think something like that?” I would think, feeling terrible about it. “A good person wouldn’t think something like that.”

But here’s something I’ve realized: everyone has these thoughts. Some people have them rarely, and some people have them all the time. Some people experience these thoughts in such an overwhelming, frightening manner they’re referred to as “intrusive thoughts.” But it happens to everyone. We all think things that we don’t actually want to act on. We all think horrible thoughts.

Does this mean that we’re all not good people? No. The human brain is really good at coming up with different possibilities. It’s basically throwing thoughts against the wall all day and seeing what sticks. Your thoughts come from things you’ve seen, heard, and felt, and often they get jumbled together into something new, surprising, and even shocking.

What separates good people from bad people is the follow-up to those thoughts. A bad person likes it when they have a horrible thought. They might not even think that the thought is horrible; it’ll just feel normal to them. A good person notices the horrible thought as strange and alarming, and may feel guilty for having the thought at all.

Remember that you are not the horrible thought. You are what you decide to do about the horrible thought.

Thinking and doing are two different things. You don’t have to act on any thought you have. You can keep it to yourself. You can journal about it. You can use it as inspiration for a short story, a painting, or a song. You can turn it into a joke and tell it to someone who likes that kind of humor, or you can tell it to yourself when you’re in need of a laugh. You can tell a close friend, or a family member, or a therapist about it – anyone who won’t judge you, and who can help you get new perspective on the thought. You can hug a stuffed animal as tightly as you can, until you feel better. You can watch a movie or read a book to give yourself something else to think about.

You have so many options, and they’re all good to do – and we are, more than anything else, what we do.
