Hello :D I'm tipsy and have a silly Batman question I always wanted another enthusiastic fan to answer. Do you mind? What is your thoughts on Robin and all the bird jokes? Dick was all about being a modern Robin Hood and that inspired his costume and then it is all bird jokes. It baffles me. Wasn't it Joker making a quip that started it??
I don’t know who started the bird jokes- but I think the boys need to have a sense of humor to help deal with all their shit. I mean, let’s be real. Imagine seeing what they see, every night, endlessly. Dealing with that.
There’s healing in humor.
We all tend to make jabs at ourselves, so if the boys make their own bird jokes about the suit and their role- well, I think it’s a way of coping. Of showing that hey, something isn’t that serious. Also, the fact that they can do it to each other is brotherly. You tease your siblings (I always figured anyway. That’s what I saw. I have no siblings so) So I think the bird jokes are a way of coping, of making light of some pretty serious shit- and also, trying to normalize something that would otherwise be so strange. Like, the boys making brotherly bird jokes because otherwise they’re just kids that all wore variations of the same suit and followed a man around who dressed up like a bat.
I like the bird jokes. For me, they don’t take away from any seriousness of the role, or the original intentions when Dick first took up the mantel. I think they’ve got a point- and they also serve to make us laugh when we’re reading something dark.
