SERIOUS PSA FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS (or anyone is going to or wants to be one) about host families
Every exchange student gets the obvious warnings such as the host dad can’t touch you or they can’t treat you like a housekeeper etc. But I’m here to tell you the more unnoticible red flags you need to lookout for.
The rules have to be consistent. It’s not ok if your host family changes the rules whenever they feel like it. And more importantly if you break a rule the punishment can’t be absurd. Seriously. Don’t pretend cruel punishments are acceptable because you don’t know the culture. If you feel like something is not right. let. someone. know. Coordinators, teachers, friends and the agency back in the home country. Ask.
If your host family makes you feel afraid to speak up, that is not ok. If they make you feel afraid to ask something, that is not ok. Things such as being afraid of being disrespectful or being afraid of talking to them or afraid of being wrong or even afraid of asking why a rule is the way it is are not ok!
You are entitled to a space of your own and a space to put your stuff. Even if have to share a room you have a right to have your things in your own place. Be it drawers, closets etc. You also have the right to have privacy. Your host family is not allowed to go through your phone/laptop, to look through your stuff or ask how much money you have. These are incredible serious and need to be comunicated with someone that can do something about it.
Your host family is allowed to limit your eletronic use, such as “dont be on your phone when you’re with us” or “dont be in your computer past 9 and things like that”. If it’s a punishment they are allowed to “take away” your eletronics but I put that loosely because they can never, ever! put your stuff somewhere where you cant have acess to it.
You have the right to be in a safe environment. You have to right to take showers and eat what you like. Maybe the family likes to eat a certain type a food that you don’t like. And that’s ok as long as they let you get or cook something else. You also have the right to a clean bed and towels. If the house is overrun with pests that’s not ok.
COORDINATORS/REPRESENTATIVES
These people are your first line of defense. You need to ask something or tell something talk to them first. If the answer or action they give you is not satisfactory, then you talk with the agency at home and your parents or relatives. Always keep your family at home updated with everything that is happening be it good or bad. Sometimes you need people removed from the situation that love you so they can help you evaluate anything.
You are in a new country to have a good time. Stay safe! Trust your instincts! And remember, if you’re in a tough situation during your exchange, you can always, always change families.
