So, if you ended up with Daemon instead of Aemond, I think your background would be fairly similar. A Greyjoy, a saltwive's son, brought to King's Landing to be groomed into the next Lord of Pike by Otto Hightower.
The difference begins when instead of being selected to train with Aemond Targaryen, you were instead scouted for the City Watch by Daemon. He saw potential in you, he liked the cut of your jib as it were, and he recognized that spark of ambition in you.
What he didn't expect was how damned stubborn you'd be. Daemon was used to surrounding himself with yes men, with people who admired him unthinkingly, with men as morally bankrupt as he. While you seemed to fit the bill at first, ambitious, seemingly lacking in empathy, with a smug grin always plastered on your face, Daemon quickly realized you were more than that. You stuck to your guns on your morals even if it meant clashing with him. You weren’t satisfied simply being his instrument, you craved power in your own right. You weren’t just a brutish thug, you were cultured in art and literature and had even picked up a few words of Old Valyrian. You were an individual, someone who strove to stand out for good or for ill. You also, and Daemon was certainly able to pick this up where Aemond wasn’t, attracted to him, although he doubted you’d ever admit it. He found you quite easy on the eyes too.
In a word, you were a challenge. So Daemon turned his charm on you. Being courted by Daemon meant getting love bombed to the extreme. First, he’d facilitate your rise through the ranks of his city watch, and eventually perhaps even further than that. He’d give you the power and influence you craved. He’d tell you that it was because you’d impressed him, because you deserved it- Which you had! Which you did! But of course, that wasn’t why he did it and I think you’d gradually realize that. Then the gifts, small at first, thoughtful little presents, casks of your favorite drink, new polish for your sword. Then bigger. He’d take you out on shopping trips to the tailor. Get whatever you’d like, don’t worry about the price my boy, the Crown is paying for that. Just so long as I get to see you in it. He’d gradually grow bolder with his touch too, first his hands lingering a little too long during training, then whispering in your ear, his hot breath tickling the hairs on your neck, subtle touches on the small of your back as you walk through crowds together. Then perhaps, something more intimate. Similar to what he did to Rhaenyra, during a night of festivities at his brothel, the both of you pleasantly sloshed on mead, he pulls you into an alcove just out of view and begins to kiss you, sloppily, tasting of liquor. As soon as you start to kiss him back, he pulls away.
Now, where this goes from here depends on how you respond. What Daemon assumed was going to happen was that once he had his conquest, he’d savor the taste of you for a bit and then move on once he had his fill. Heartbreak, game over. 💔 However, you’re a charming person, a clever person, and a useful person. So maybe you hold his attention for longer than he anticipated. Not only are you willful, always giving him a new challenge, but you are also shockingly kind, you return his attention with genuine concern for his wellbeing. You volunteered to go to the Stepstones, you fought alongside him against the Crabfeeder, you even helped tend to his wounds afterwards. Maybe you end up holding his attention indefinitely. Maybe Daemon, the Rogue Prince, the unfeeling monster who toasted to his sister-in-law and nephew’s death, finds himself actually, genuinely, truly in love.
Here’s the thing though. It’s almost impossible for Daemon to love anyone more than Daemon loves Daemon. Your own ambition feeds his, rather than tempering his all-consuming desire for power you end up encouraging it with your equal desire. That will inevitably lead Daemon into the arms of Rhaenyra. Whether or not he has any true love for her, or he is just using her for his (or so he claims, your mutual) gains is irrelevant. Even if you’re willing to stomach his disloyalty, you probably won’t be able to stomach the rest of his actions. Not only would he still commit terrible atrocities like Blood and Cheese, he would be doing so without any input from you, against your own judgement and will in many cases. It would become increasingly obvious that everything Daemon has ever done, he did because Daemon wanted to do it in that moment, that not only he is so utterly selfish and always has been, he’s also completely lacking in impulse control. He’s an overgrown child throwing temper tantrums. I think you’d honestly end up pretty disgusted by him. Not to mention, we see what he does to Rhaenyra when she fights with him. Who’s to say when the usual manipulation tactics didn’t work and his temper was frayed that he wouldn’t physically hurt you too?
Maybe after his experiences at Harrenhal Daemon would start to try to be a better partner to you. Or maybe his experiences with magic would result in him leaving you behind entirely as he fixated on getting Rhaenyra on the throne and fulfilling the prophecy of the Prince that was Promised. (Either way, if the canon of the books is any indication neither change of heart will last and he’ll be back on his Id-driven bullshit again soon enough.) The question is, if he came crawling back to you after everything he’d done, would you still want him? Maybe you’d need him, to keep your grasp on the power and luxury you crave, but is that really a happy ending?
What made people like Laena and Nettles capable of taming Daemon is they were not only fierce enough to catch his attention and kind enough to keep it, but their humility and contentment wore off on him. You don't have that. Which is why in the end and you and he will end similarly to him and Rhaenyra in canon, ie, in disaster. That’s why I ultimately decided against him as your matchup. Such a story would be fascinating, really, one hell of a read. But the thing is, I presume you, like most people, come to get matchups for escapism, not for a fascinating character study. Like, I assume you want a happy ending for your love story, or at least a bittersweet one. I really genuinely can’t see this ending in anything but disaster.
Now, if you disagree with me, or if others do, that’s totally fair. I will readily admit I am Daemon’s biggest hater, entertaining as I occasionally find him my opinion of him is pretty low. Maybe somebody with a more favorable perspective on him would disagree.
