The Il Palazzo Experimental hotel was once a Renaissance palace that has recently been revamped by French designer Dorothée Meilichzon. The 32-room boutique hotel features pastel color-blocked walls, terrazzo floors, marble furnishings, and plenty of arches. The interiors of the hotel were inspired by the surrounding Dorsoduro neighborhood with a color scheme that is a mixture of warm and cool tones. Giraffe Manor | Nairobi, Kenya Believe it or not, this twelve-room manor is actually a boutique hotel that has endangered giraffes freely roaming the grounds. The manor was built in 1932 and the design of this unique ivy-covered lodge is based off of a traditional Scottish hunting hotel. The property was then converted to a small hotel in the 1980s by new ownership, thus creating a home for the endangered Rothschild subspecies of the giraffe family. The rooms are adorned with early twentieth century furniture and art pieces and compliment with Art Deco bathrooms. The overall feel of the hotel is reminiscent of the aristocratic style that was popularized in Nairobi during the 1930s. . . . . Stone & Wood. The rocksresort, located in the municipality of Laax in Switzerland, has a unique design rooted in sustainability. The eight cube-shaped buildings all made from solid regional quartzite which allows the resort to visually stand out while simultaneously blending in with the surroundings. The design of the exterior facades were inspired by the megaliths of the alpine landscape, and look like boulders that were carved directly from the mountains. Notable elements of stone and wood are apparent in the design of all the public and private spaces. Interior furnishings were designed from natural materials with oak wood lining in the bedrooms, as well as lime and concrete walls and floors in the living areas. Concept: “Canopy of Light is a dynamic installation featuring 14 trees in three sizes, made from hundreds of hand-blown Bohemian crystal leaves with a champagne matte brass finish. What makes the installation unique on the hospitality market is that the lights in the trees are specially programmed to produce different effects. The Mandarin Oriental has a day scene, a night scene, and then every hour the lights ‘move’ through the trees. Each tree is modelled separately and differently, roughly 400-500 channels, depending on the tree. This means a different light effect can be programmed to each individual tree and not necessarily the ‘forest’ as a whole.
