Hemlock and Golden Calves
Hemlock and Golden Calves
Hosea 10:4-5. They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field. The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it. Because Israel had made false…

House of Bread, 1906 Westwood Blvd., West Los Angeles, CA 90025
This new family Persian bakery opened in the Persian part of town. The mom is Persian and she spent time in Paris, thus they make sangak, baguettes, sourdough bread, and croissants. The oven is in the back. They also sell some prepared foods (hummus, Persian potato salad), jam and some type of quick bread. They had samples. There’s not a lot of choice but the quality is top notch.
* Sangak (no price posted, not sure how much it was): Thin and spongy with more pronounced finger indents, studded with sesame seeds. It was fresh and chewy. I wouldn’t say it’s the best I’ve had but it’s certainly excellent. The sample piece I received was underbaked though.
* Wheat baguette: Dense and chewy, softer interior, loved how it was encrusted with sesame seeds, so amazing with butter
* Hummus: chunkier, clean tasting but different (no tahini)
On weekends they sell more items. I think they’re going to sell challah soon. The bread is naturally leavened bread and made from scratch with high quality ingredients. The décor is very simple and there was nowhere to sit. It’s a takeout kind of place.

King of the Jews.
King of the Jews.
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people,…

Christmas Eve. If not here, then nowhere. Luke 2: 1-20
Christmas Eve. If not here, then nowhere. Luke 2: 1-20
The bottom line of the birth of Jesus the Christ is this: If Jesus the Christ isn’t born into the here-and-now of life’s realities, then Jesus the Christ is born nowhere.
Christmas Eve sermon in my parish is at “T-minus 10hrs 14 min” and counting. The community dinner is behind us. Lessons and Carols has rolled by in stylish worshipful fashion. “Dateline Bethlehem” was a riot! Soon to follow was…
