Random muscle twitches that you can’t consciously recreate while you’re trying to fall asleep is your body’s equivalent of your house settling at night.
Old House Noises
I’ve done well adapting to being a homeowner, but I don’t think I will ever adapt to the sudden and unexplained noises that come with owning an old house. I always imagine the worst, though often, the house is simply sighing or creaking or settling into a more comfortable position.

Thump. thump. thump. You look up recognizing footsteps. Wait, we are not expecting visitors, you think. You place down your laptop on the nearest flat surface then head upstairs. You consider who made an unexpected pop up. You are halfway up when you see the shape of boots. It makes your heart jump until your eyes look up to see no one is in them. The house is actually just settling as it does occasionally every year. It still terrifies you.
The house is settling, and it's rather unsettling.
I've been thinking about this Edmund Burke quote a lot lately- mainly because after moving into my "new" old house, I've had to start thinking about foundation repair and how we will go about restoring this structure into the home we envisioned when we purchased it.
