I’ve been planning this post for a long time, and it probably won’t end up as eloquent as I intended, but whatever.
I want to talk to you today about fairies.
It all started when I was eight years old. I saw fairies in my yard. I told my mom about them. She knew I had an active imagination, and she humored me at first. I got super angry whenever I’d hear on TV or in my folklore books that fairies are make-believe. I’d ask my mom, “How can people say fairies aren’t real when I’ve seen them with my own eyes?” She’d say what I saw was my imagination, or birds, or my eyes playing tricks on me. Coincidentally, this was also around the time that the movie Fairy Tale: A True Story was released, which definitely fueled my obsession.
Eventually, after enough teasing from my classmates, I dropped it. I never really stopped believing in fairies. Or, more accurately, I never really accepted that they weren’t real. I did stop thinking about them, and eventually, I stopped seeing them.
Then, in college, when I started to hone my craft, I saw them again. When I came home for the summer after I graduated, my parents’ property was crawling with fairies. One of them introduced himself, and told me he was one of the fairies I saw when I was a child. He told me his name, but I couldn’t quite understand it. Later that night, he showed up in a dream, and he spelled his name for me: Myrundai. I still have no idea how it’s pronounced. I painted him in watercolors. I wanted to include that painting in this post, but I lost my digital copy of it and the painting itself is still at my parents’ house.
There are fairies at Iksandr’s mother’s house, too. When I was living there, one of them introduced themselves. Again, they told me their name in a dream. Anthielle. They told me they lived in a tree in the back yard. Sure enough, one of the trees in the back yard had a little fairy door at the base. I have pictures and a brief description in this post.
When Iksandr and I finally got our own place, I didn’t notice the fairies right away. When we adopted Raven, he saw them as soon as we brought him home. He’d always stare into the courtyard and get really pissed off and start pounding on the window. I’d look out the window expecting to see a bird, an insect, or something, but there was nothing there. I concluded there was probably a fairy in the courtyard. Of course, later that night he introduced himself in a dream. His name is Losh. He loves taunting my cat.
Clearly, fairies revealing their names in dreams is a pattern with me. I’ve also noticed that fairies tend to have “pets” or familiar creatures. Myrundai and his friends had a familiar named Teahouse. I met Teahouse when I noticed him latching onto the back of my neck (throat chakra?) and draining my energy. He looked like one of those green blobby guys from the Muncinex commercials. I confronted Myrundai about it. Myrundai assured me that Teahouse had always served him and the other fairies by collecting energy, I just hadn’t noticed. Suddenly most of my adolescence made sense. Anthielle had a companion, too. It was a big fat salamander-type animal the size of a small dog. It was hot pink with black spots and it was CUTE as HELL.
One final fun little story which demonstrates the amount of influence that Myrundai and the other landwights have at my parents’ house. The last time I went home to visit, my mom had set up what looked like a fairy altar on my old dresser. All of my fairy dolls and figurines were set up with shiny little knickknacks around them, and my painting of Myrundai (which I swear to god I took with me when I moved out. I have no clue where she found it) was positioned in the center. When I asked my mom about it, she said she just thought it looked pretty.
So there you have it. Do my experiences with fairies align with any of yours? Do fairies reveal their names in dreams to everyone, or is it just me? Who are some of the fairies you’ve met?
