At one time the philosopher Wittgenstein lived on the same staircase [as Housman] as indeed did the art historian Anthony Blunt. Wittgenstein was one day taken short; and knocked at Housman's door and asked to use the lavatory. Housman just looked at him and said "Certainly not." and closed the door.
