Missing Moments
I can count the number of times I have been sick on one hand. Once, when I was very young and traveling with Lamb in Egypt — I’d come down with a fever after eating something questionable the locals had offered me.
The next time I had gotten sick was during the war, it was cold and rainy and I lain in bed, thinking that I would be dead by morning. And I had gotten sick when Brianna had come home from school with the flu; we had wallowed in self pity, eating bowls and bowls of chicken soup.
Now, I was sick again, but without the modern amenities I desperately wanted right now. I prided myself on my almost immaculate immune system, having never gotten sick the first time I traveled through the stones. I blamed it entirely on Jamie. He had come home two days ago from hunting, his skin fevered and sweaty.
Even when facing and accepting death, Kaneki found himself fighting for his life. Memories of Hide flashed before his eyes as a blade came to piece his skull.
Don’t die
It was always his voice he heard in those critical last moments when he faced a new opponent the CCG through at him.
Don’t die
Kaneki managed to dodge and inflict a wound on the sword-wielding human. The CCG’s lapdogs have become more skilled in holding a weapon, even Kaneki had a hard time dealing with them.
Noting the wound, Kaneki discerned that the wound was deep enough to handicap the human so Kaneki would make an escape.
I can’t find it in myself to hurt a human
You were nothing like them, but why do I see you in them?
Did I pierce through you so easily like that?
Were you so fragile, too?
Using his kagune, Kaneki flew from building to building like a wingless angel. A few minutes passed when he paused to rest, and Kaneki watched each star shimmer, smiling brightly at him. Even as the sun sets and the earth is engulfed in darkness, the moon and stars never allowed him to be submerged in complete numbness.
A shiver ran up Kaneki’s spine, and he felt his nose tingle. Even with the title ‘King,’ even he was susceptible to colds.
Take care of yourself
“Hide,” Kaneki spoke aloud. It was the first time in years that he allowed Hide’s name to pass through his lips. Even among his friends, Kaneki never let himself utter his name in front of others. His heart ached when he imagine Goat asking about him. How would he explain? How would be begin to describe the type of person Hide was?
Would he talk about how funny he was? Would he talk about how he protected him as kids? Would he talk about how he saved his life? Would he tell them about how kind he was? Would he tell them he died? Could he say, out loud, that he killed him?
It’s okay
The cold wind stung his eyes dripping with tears. Even as he pressed his fingers against the corner of his eyes, Kaneki shoulders and lips trembled as he fought back bitter thoughts.
“I wish Hide never met me,” Kaneki murmured. Touka quietly approached and sat next to him, looking out into the bright city lights. They were just like the stars. She knew Kaneki had gone out again and would try to play the role of the lone-wolf hero, and now she found him alone and crying on top of a deteriorating rooftop.
“He’d still be alive, if we never met,” It took all his willpower for Kaneki to maintain control or else he would have broken down in front of her. She could only watch, her heart filled with empathy as she thought about Yoriko. What kind of person would she be if she killed Yoriko...
“But,” Kaneki continued as Touka thought of her own human friend, “I can’t but be happy to have met him.” Face stained with tears, Kaneki couldn’t help but smile, thinking about the moment Hide introduced himself. There was snot running down his nose then, Kaneki chuckled as he wiped his own nose.
“Nagachika-” Touka begin, gaining Kaneki’s full attention, “had a good heart, I realized that when I spoke to him at Kamii...”
“Kamii?”
“I went with Nishiki to check out the campus, because I wanted to attend,” Touka slowly revealed, “and I ran into him. He was taking down posters that said you were missing.”
Kaneki eyes shot open. He opened his mouth to ask more, but he let her continue without interrupting.
“He talk about you, and he helped me understand you a bit more. I was grateful for that. Even then, I had a feeling he knew about us, but he still treated me like I was normal, like we were friends, and he trusted me with a secret too.” Touka smiled softly when she thought back of that moment years ago. “You should never feel regret for knowing someone like him.”
“Touka-chan...I” Before Kaneki could finish, Touka got up, stretched, and walked back to the roof entrance. “I’m heading back. Gotta open shop early tomorrow.” Looking back, Touka flashed him a sympathetic smile. “Don’t freeze to death out here. I’m sure Hide wouldn’t want that.” And shut the door.
Kaneki wrapped his arms around his should and rubbed them for warmth. Before, Kaneki would have never believed that Touka would say such things about Hide. If someone had told him that she would have befriended Hide, he would have laughed. You always find your way into others’ hearts.
Soon, the stars became brighter, and Kaneki decided it was time to head back officially.
Hide, even if I fall from the sky, you’ll always be there to catch me again. Even when I want to die, I can’t help but remember those nights as we stared at the stars. When I look up into the sky, I remember your smile, and it makes me want to live on to see the stars again.
Without fame in your life, your first and second home loses its light. See I can write too…..
That night, a text is sent to Zed's phone--- the first of many to come. [msg]: Would it be a good time to mention that the pocketwatch is actually a cursed artifact from an old German witch? My plan was to get rid of all those pesky tourists, but I had a change of heart and decided to warn you.
Vladimir hastily sends another text a few moments later. [msg]: Just kidding, of course! I would never try to curse a customer, tourist or otherwise.
Zed allows the phone to sit a few moments, distracted by a rather perplexing bug in his code. He has checked and rechecked each and every line – by all rights, everything should be working perfectly, and yet, for some godforsaken reason, the damn thing breaks the moment he tries to run it.
He lets out an exasperated sigh, then swivels the office chair around and over to the phone. As he picks it up, it buzzes again, the screen flashing with a small image of a letter with a red circle enclosing a 2 attached to its corner. Zed slides his finger on the screen, unlocking the device, leaning back in his chair, and kicking his feet onto the table. When he sees who the message is from, he stiffens, unsure of how to react.
In the hours since the conversation, Zed had managed to convince himself that this is dumb, that he shouldn’t indulge such feelings when Vladimir only has information to offer him. There are plenty of other people he could entertain himself with, people who don’t own a gun to shoot him with when things do, inevitably, go sour.
Despite this, despite the logical part of his brain desperately attempting to throttle him into thinking sensibly, Zed taps out a reply, a smile crossing his face without his notice.
Once he finishes typing out the messages, Zed stares at them a moment.
Hm. Perhaps he should put effort into texting properly, for once. He would hate to be recognised for such a simple mistake.
It takes just one more moment to fix the messages, deleting emojis and inserting full words instead of poor abbreviations, at which point Zed presses send, staring at the phone for another moment.
Well. His code can wait, really. If he has been unable to figure anything out in the last half an hour, why would he be able to now? His brain needs a break, to relax -- he can look at it tomorrow, when his mind is rested and fresh.
Yes. Of course.
[text]: Thought I was going to have a heart attack.[text]: After such a delightful conversation you’d still consider cursing me? How cruel.[text]: I am glad to see your message, though. I’d hate to let such a fascinating mystery slip by…
@mythshaped replied to your post “ “Alright, but some of those kinks on that list aren’t even...”

the second his favourite female finally shows face outside of his car, he’s quick to unlock it and let her in. he scoffs playfully, head shaking as he takes in the sight he’s graced with. “ yah... how am i supposed to take you out when you look this good ? i can’t have other men seeing you like this... come on, get in the car before someone steals you from me. ”
