Hello,

To be honest I don’t know how helpful this blog will be. I am sure there are more talented and knowledgeable people on this platform then me. But while I have seen great sourcing and resources on here, I thought I would like to share what I know about sources themselves.

I am a postgraduate student and I am very interested in topic of misinformation and political news. As I said I don’t know much, but I would like to share what I know which is more general information about sources. How to work with sources and text and how to categorize them.

Let me stress this, it’s great and important to share resources in these times and I have seen many great blogs do so. I just want to add what I know.

Here's a solution has worked for about 90% of images I've fed into it for the last decade or so as long as they're not heavily cropped or distorted.

Image Search Options (IQDB Context is a similar extension) is a lightweight plugin/extension for Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave etc.) and Firefox.

This adds a new option to your right click menu.

Hover over Image Search Options and you'll get a few choices. I usually just use SauceNAO and IQDB. Using this image as an example, I've clicked SauceNAO, and this is what I get after it opens a new tab for me. You can also upload pictures directly to IQDB, meaning it's fairly simple to use on mobile too if you can't use extensions!

If you click the Source you'll go straight to the Twitter post, but on the right there's links to Danbooru and Gelbooru too. Below the leftmost image are links to search for the image on Google, IQDB and a few others.

You can go deeper by using other services like TinEye, Yandex, Trace but that's usually my last resort for sourcing content and often means you're just going to end up trawling for comments on obscure websites left by people that have sourced it themselves.

Has anyone been able to figure out what’s causing the bit of text/coding for the source on images/vids to be hidden? This is really fucking annoying.

It doesn’t appear to be adblock and I don’t understand how Avast! may be the culprit, but it was installed in time frame I noticed it being hidden.

Ok this is actually a slight worry of mine, because I had heard about this happening a lot. If I link a url though it should be fine, right? Rather than… Downloading and uploading which I have seen some of… If I ever do it on accident PLEASE yell

Well I won't 'yell' at anyone lol... it's disappointing, that's about it.  I understand the urge to 'i want to post this art but i can't bother with finding the source oh well!'. but it really hurts a lot of artists when they see their hard work that sometimes took hours, weeks, months to be posted without credit. A lot of artists gave up drawing and some gave up posting it in public. Some just leaves the fandom which i reeeeeally don't want to see.  https://saucenao.com/ -- this is a good place to see if you can find the original source of the art you've downloaded.  If you can't find through that, I really suggest not posting your art.  One other way is browsing through pixiv through tags, finding a pic there and posting it here. Now a lot of artist DO NOT LIKE REPOST. It's best to check their profile and see if they really don't want you doing that. Akiwoz is one of the shizaya artist who reeeeally doesn't like it, so I never even reblog her art even though she's my favorite artist. She has a tumblr tho, so I just reblog from her directly.  Once you have an art you really want to post there's several ways to source it.

1) top right corner see that clockwheel thing? It says advance option. You can link the url source there. 

2) you can just post the art and link the url in the text. See the part that has bold, italic, and slash? Right after that is the link urls.

Sourcing posts - You're doing it wrong! - PLEASE READ!

Two of the most common mistakes people make are only putting the source below the image (where it can be removed or modified by anyone who re-blogs it) and/or putting their own blog as the source in the top right corner (where the true source of the image should be).

What you should do is put the true source of the image in the top right corner (by clicking the gear icon and copying the URL into the Content Source box) where it cannot be modified or removed and put the artist's name below the image (with or without a link) which will make your blog's name appear to anyone who re-blogs it therefore eliminating the need to put your blog as the source to show people who posted it.

Please re-blog this so it can be seen by the people who need to see it. (those who don't know how to source properly)

VERY IMPORTANT:

don't repost the art of an artist that already posted it on his/her own tumblr!!!

just make sure you give the actual artist enough credit and not just the website. You won't give the artist credit by only mentioning the website where you found it, unless it's the artist her/his very own weblog.

DON'T CLAIM STUFF AS YOUR OWN, THAT'S TERRIBLY RUDE AND YOU ARE PERSONALLY OFFENDING THE ARTIST FOR DOING THAT.

if you want to find an artwork's source:

use saucenao, it's an easy source finder. This is mainly for works on Pixiv. Just upload the image there, press search and it will immediately give you the actual source.

find on Google Images based on image. Press the tiny photo icon right next to your search bar. There you can give in the URL of the image, or you can upload it. It will show various format's of the image.

Many blogs have probably made similar posts. But they're there for a reason. Many artists, especially on Pixiv, are deleting their works because it's being shared on other social network-sites constantly, without getting credit. This people, is called stealing art. And stealing ain't a good thing okay.   I really wish that every person that registers on Tumblr receives a required tutorial on how to source art that isn't theirs.

This post is probably full of grammar mistakes and I probably have missed a few websites out, idk, but I hope my point got across.
