O.k. Where to start?

As I said in my post on Ron, I like him as a character. I also like Hermione, but still I got never reconciled with Romione. Because you can like two characters and still think that they are not meant for each other.

There can be no doubt that it was supposed to happen since book four. I saw that JKR was going there, but I never liked it.

Now, you can dislike a ship and still see that it makes narrative sense. And in a way it did: Ron's uncertainty about girls in general and Hermione in particular feeds into his doubts that are multiplied by the Horcrux and this drives the plot of Ron leaving Harry and Hermione in TDH.

I think that the teenage drama in HBP between Ron and Hermione though only served the purpose of diving the pint home that girly girls like Cho, Lavender and Fleur are not for Harry and Ron who are the real heroes. Ron imitated the detour Harry made with Cho before he ended with the sensible, clever girl instead of the one that likes make up. I dislike that very much. But this as well has a narrative sense even if I don't like it.

In addition Romione is another method to fasten Harry's ties to the wizarding world. With the inherent classism in HP it is important that Harry (the good aristocrat) is separated from the inferior muggles and how to do that better than by ensuring that his friends also lose all ties to the Muggle world. Harry and Hermione are safely part of the Wizarding World via being incorporated into the Weasley family. I think it's no happenstance that both Harry and Hermione are single children. I am absolutely convinced that JKR originally intended for Hermione's parents (who don't even have a name!) to stay in Australia forever and that she only back pedalled when fans asked about their fate.

Did I mention that I hate that Harry and Hermione basically become part of the establishment as Head Auror and Minister instead of fighting to improve things?

So, I can see all these narrative patterns and while I'm not O.k. with some of their purposes I could buy Romione as a way to up the personal consequences of the Horcrux hunt.

Romione even fulfills some tropes : friends to lovers, obviously. Friends almost have a fall out over a woman, man and woman try to make each other jealous and almost miss the right moment to get together. So, JKR puts a certain amount of effort into the ship. I don't like the whole drama to be honest. I dislike the 'let's make him/her jealous' trope. But you can't deny that it is a set up for the ship.

There is only one general problem. JKR uses tropes and narrative patterns to bring them together, but there is one thing that the ship actually lacks imho. And that is for me quite essential:

Hermione and Ron are not very compatible. Hermione is ambitious, she can be quite ruthless, she is not very interested in sports and she wants to make a difference. She doesn’t really have self-confidence issues. She knows she’s intelligent (although she likes to get compliments about that!). A consequence of her intelligence is that she loves to be in the right and that she can be bossy. Her big flaw is her anxiety. She has a deep set fear of failing even though she knows that this is not likely. It is actually a trait that happens a lot in intelligent women. I have read some takes that Hermione is not actually that smart, that she learns all the stuff. But just because she frets before exams does not mean that she would not pass anyway. Having impostor syndrome does not mean that you are actually an impostor.

Ron on the other hand, is not ambitious. Ron wants to be loved and happy. In the first book we see that he wants to be famous. It’s not that he is dumb, but he - in a rather typical boy’s way - doesn’t think school is that important. Ron wants Quidditch, fun, friends, a peaceful live, validation, love and acceptance. He cares very much for his friends, but he doesn’t care much about the injustices of the wizarding world, because he has been part of it for all his life. He doesn’t see them, and if Hermione points them out (like with the elves ), he thinks she exaggerates.

So, they really do not make a good couple. I think they work as friends, because the dynamics of friendships are different and you can tolerate things with a friend that would drive you mad with a partner. I think Ron would hold Hermione back and Hermione on the other hand would not give Ron the validation he needs. The way they bicker is o.k. for friends but horrid for a couple. It plays a bit into the trope that ‘married couples’ should nag at each other and that is awful.

Which leads me to another point: Hermione and Ron always bring out the worst in each other. A couple that is a good match gets better than they are together, but Ron and Hermione are not like that. That is so from the very beginning: Ron makes a cruel comment about Hermione although he doesn’t know that she heard that. And that is not even his usual way. In book three Hermione insists that Crookshanks did nothing to Scabbers (which is right, but there was no way Hermione could know that), and she digs her heels in, stubbornly insisting that she is right - and that is not the very nice. She doesn’t have empathy with Ron who lost his pet. Meanwhile Ron (and Harry) are complete jerks about the firebolt Harry gets as a present. They basically put Quidditch over their friendship to her, and refuse to see that she acted out of genuine care for Harry.

In book four Ron is a jerk about the Yule Ball. He is jealous, so you can cut him some slack. But after he didn’t talk with Harry for months, he has to prove his refound loyalty by attacking Hermione over Victor Krum. Really, Ron?

Things are a bit more relaxed in fifth year, Umbridge is too big of a problem. They have to band together.

And then you have sixth year. Ron gets together with Lavender because he wants some kissing experience? Wow. And Hermione attacks Ron over kissing Lavender which is completely out of bonds and one of her worst moments.

Ron’s worst moment is leaving Harry and Hermione on the Horcrux hunt, and while we can understand that, this is his worst moment and it’s only fuelled by his jealousy and the fact that he feels inadequate in face of Hermione’s intelligence. That does not bode well for the future, because Hermione will not suddenly lose her intelligence just so that Ron can feel better.

So, some of the worst things Ron and Hermione do, are to each other! Sry, not sry, a couple doing the worst to each other usually happens just before the divorce.

I could overlook that as well, if we didn’t have the Epilogue and Cursed Child. Because we do not always fall in love with people who are compatible or who are the best for us. As teenage crush can be something that is not the right partner.

But no, JKR had to go all the way: As if a couple getting together in school and staying together would not be unusual enough, she claims that all of the couples in HP are like that? How? If she had just stopped the book before the epilogue, I could well believe that Ron and Hermione were a couple for a time and then separate maybe even amicably. But Hermione has a career, and Ron doesn’t? And they stay together? As if wasn’t a recipe for complete disaster?

And it’s even worse with Cursed Child. There we actually are led to believe that Ron in another timeline would have been happy with another woman but Hermione would be alone and miserable without Ron. WHAT THE FUCK? This is actually the one thing that riles me up the most. lol.

So: TLDR: While JKR uses tropes and narrative patterns to bring Ron and Hermione together and they even make sense if you look at the end point of the books she absolutely failed to depict them as a compatible couple or as a couple who actually make each other better. Ron and Hermione are always at their worst when they fight and the things they do to each other really show them at their worst. And yet JKR wants us to believe that Ron is the only possibility for Hermione and claims they have a long relationship without ever giving us any reason to believe that it would work.

I have seen arguments, that Ron would be able to improve Hermione’s temper, that he would hold her back if she would act too ruthless. To me that never made any sense. If you think Hermione needs a nice guy who can make her softer, Neville is right there. And he even had a crush on Hermione in fourth year.

like. hp is ultimately urban fantasy, right. yes, the magical world is isolationist and traditional, but so many people that enter the wizarding world from muggle backgrounds every year, and NONE of them have said oh god why do you people still use fucking PARCHMENT

the thing about parchment is: it’s not paper. yes, it was used as a writing medium, like papyrus was. but it’s not papyrus either.

parchment is animal skin. untanned animal skin. the production process is arduous--the dehairing solution soak alone takes 8+ days, and up to twice as long in winter. probably magic streamlines the process, but you see the problem with using this material for 11 year olds to write their shitty homework assignments on.
