been thinkin bout
~parchment~
and the absolutely buckwild implications of its use in the harry potter world (and probably others???) as like, notebook paper
there is a fanfiction in one of the tags i follow that is ostensibly a modern ass student/barista au but the title is like "macchiatos and parchment" and im like. macchiatos and what now
like. hp is ultimately urban fantasy, right. yes, the magical world is isolationist and traditional, but so many people that enter the wizarding world from muggle backgrounds every year, and NONE of them have said oh god why do you people still use fucking PARCHMENT
no. stop that. what the hell is wrong with you. find a way to magically mass produce paper. i will personally go out and bulk buy paper with muggle ass money every semester until you figure this out
WE CAN USE PAPER! WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY!
god, do you know what parchment is? no, better question: do you know how labor intensive that shit is to make? no, even better question: do you know what parchment is?
the thing about parchment is: it’s not paper. yes, it was used as a writing medium, like papyrus was. but it’s not papyrus either.
parchment is animal skin. untanned animal skin. the production process is arduous--the dehairing solution soak alone takes 8+ days, and up to twice as long in winter. probably magic streamlines the process, but you see the problem with using this material for 11 year olds to write their shitty homework assignments on.
and the kids don’t know this, right? there’s no way they know. if they knew, SOMEONE would have something to say about it. and you’d think that someone would be hermione!! but hermione must know about it, because she’s hermione. lavender brown had her elderly rabbit die in PoA and was pretty distraught about that! but what, everybody thinks it’s so normal and fine to write all their 11 year old ass homework on fucking animal skin in the year of our luigi 1991 that they don’t even feel the need to acknowledge it, let alone comment or have an opinion?
ofc the actual answer is either that it’s jkr’s committed vendetta against animals or that she ALSO did not know what it was or think about the implications of anything she wrote (as always) and when she found out, decided to change nothing and double down (as always). but if we dota for a second and really inhabit that watsonian perspective? the statement this makes about the hpverse is bonkers.
HOGWARTS VERSE - BASIC INFO FOR ISABELLE (LEANING TOWARD MAIN CANON)
Isabelle is the second born of Jade Purefoy though there’s no sign of her and Castor’s father. To her understanding, he left before she was born. Around the time Isabelle is five, she starts to notice that Jade has a very deep disliking of her first born, Castor.
Isabelle’s never been too sure how long it was going on, but the abuse that her brother suffered pushed him to leave when he was thirteen, leaving Isabelle alone with their mother until she is six when Jade disappears.
Isabelle is taken in by her maternal grandparents and raised up as a witch, moving her from New York back to England where their family originates. While Castor attends Ilvermorny in the States while under the care of a group home during breaks, Isabelle grows up in Purefoy Manor just as her mother and the twins had. When she turns eleven, she’s sent to Hogwarts and is sorted into Slytherin.
Castor graduates Ilvermorny with more than desirable marks and goes into the career path of becoming an auror. He spends some of his free time attempting to contact Isabelle, though his attempts are foiled by Johnathan and Elizabeth who intercept many of his letters. His attempts die down drastically when Johnathan decides to make a house call to set him straight.
It takes years for her to find a letter that is long forgotten from her brother, hidden in Johnathan’s office. She assumes he forgot to dispose of it with the rest. She’s overwhelmed with emotions, one of which is hope. Hope that she’s able to contact her brother and finally escape the ruthlessness that is Johnathan and Elizabeth Purefoy. She manages to get into contact with him and they spend months writing to one another under their grandparents’ radar.
Her grandparents discover the connection during Isa’s fourth year and Isabelle is cornered once she comes home from school for the summer. In a scuffle, Isabelle manages to kill Elizabeth (though completely unintentional) and renders Johnathan unconscious. She escapes and manages to make her way to New York where she ends up on her brother’s stoop in the dead of night. She stays with him for a couple months and then things take a terrible turn.
The door is blasted off its hinges one night and Castor is quick to attempt to hide his sister under her bed. He goes to face off Johnathan but is overpowered and is dragged back into his sister’s room where Isabelle is dragged out from under the bed, kicking and screaming before Castor is killed in front of her. She’s whisked away back to Purefoy Manor and an arranged marriage is negotiated for her with plans for her to marry after she graduates from Hogwarts.

“Why is it always Albania with Dark Wizards?”
Fish talked a lot when she was nervous. Well, Fish talked a lot in general, but it was almost unbearable when she was nervous.
Albania.
So many terrible memories, repressed, swallowed. Small talk (or unstoppable chatter in that case) helped her numb the past. It made it distant, almost nonexistent. It was silence she feared.
“I mean, are they all just trying to copy Voldemort? He’s dead, it’s time for them to move on, maybe even try a sunnier place? It’s never Hawaii or Sicily, it’s always Albania.”
To give credit to her pleas, the sky was terribly grey. There was no cloud, nothing but a giant sea of dullness. The woods were cold and damp, the trees almost holding their breath, waiting for something that would never come. The scent of pines and humidity blended in a strong, almost intoxicating atmosphere.
“You rarely leave your office Jeremy, and when you do, this is where we go. It’s a shame, really. I’m telling you. At least, fugitive death eaters flee to funnier places.”
But they weren’t here to follow a dangerous fugitive, simply to investigate. The Ministry would have never sent Jeremy along otherwise. It seemed that Fish was the muscle, and he was, well. The brain. To be fair, she was famous for punching first, asking next. This particular mission demanded more of a… diplomatic approach.

Unbroken Bonds
@twistedstxrs
Everyone well almost everyone knew that Freya prided herself in being the only one that could annoy Draco, and no one else it was that bond between brother and sister that they shared that annoyed Freya any time someone tried to do something to her brother, and even if it meant Harry who she was on good terms with. But following the Second Wizarding War and Voldemort’s permanent defeat a lot of what remained of his followers and supporters turned against the Malfoy family for their hasty exit from the fight leading up to the Dark Lord’s demise. Freya and Draco were just spending time with one another when one of those followers had corner them looking to pick a fight with Draco, Freya not in the mood for it whipped out her wand so fast before the other even reached into his robes and blasted them halfway across the ally, her time at Hogwarts, the books at the manor, and her training in Dumbledore’s Army had made her something of a skilled witch, sure was young and still had loads to learn outside of Hogwarts but she was not the Malfoy to mess with no matter if you were friend or foe, she turned to Draco.
“Why can’t we go anywhere without one of his morons trying to do us in?” Freya asked, wand still at hand.
For Sal: A nudibranch, which is a hermaphroditic (though unable to impregnate themselves) sea slug that comes in some BEAUTIFUL varieties and employs toxic chemicals that are usually "distasteful rather than lethal"
@thecorteztwins
JZJZJZJ oh my god I almost screamed when I saw you gave Sal a slug djdjdj. But its si damn fitting for him!!! Heck, made me wonder if his race is part slug XD Sal just scowling and he gets known as the smallest Ravenclaw with a slug for a patronus.
@mystic-muses lil Hogwarts starter
Rowan picks up Atticus’ wand from where it had fallen on the grass and teases it between his fingers. He’s never really looked at the wand before. He’s always been focused on looking at other parts of Atticus. He studies the wand now. Its a pale wood, Rowan’s not sure what. Its pretty. Suits Atticus.
Rowan offers the wand back to Atticus. “What is it? What’s it made of, I mean.” Rowan’s own is made of holly with a dragon heartstring core. He wonders if Atticus’ is similar at all. Not that it would mean anything at all if they were.
