ok i'm thinking about when rose asks if shane's ever been with a guy and if it was different and we immediately see flashbacks of ilya - but, we don't see anything recent, shane goes right back to the beginning when ilya first showed interest and then their first time and the use of those flashbacks feels so intentional and important because he's asked if it's different as in, more than fine, as in, something he wants more than anything else
he thinks about ilya before the olympics, before russia and vegas, before we didn't even kiss
he thinks back to the beginning when he first started falling in love with ilya and wasn't terrified of it, wasn't terrified ilya didn't feel the same way and hadn't yet convinced himself that this thing between them was wrong - because he imagined they were falling together (they were)
and in thinking of that, we watch him revert back to that softness in the stairwell, feeling every ounce of love he has for him and accepting it for what it is this time
because it's not just that he's gay it's that he's in love with his rival and it's as if his hindsight is reminding him he's been in love with him the whole time and it's time he faces that head on instead of being so quick to believe ilya doesn't love him
Ilya, recently moved to Ottawa and started with his new team is about to host his first Centaurs get together. He wouldn’t admit it to anyone because he’s got a reputation to uphold, but he’s a little bit nervous about it because he wants to make a good impression; he wants this team to work out. He’s here for the long run.
Super last minute he breaks some cooking tool or other that is essential for the dinner and he just panics. The cool and collected persona he was hiding behind falls apart, and suddenly there’s no thoughts in his brain. So he panic calls Shane, because surely Shane can fix this for him, “Shane it is an emergency! Where the fuck do you buy this last minute?”
Shane is bemused by the panic, and says to just get express shipping on Amazon like he usually does. “No I need it now, the guys will be over in an hour! What kind of host doesn’t have xyz, I will look like a fool, the guys will point and laugh. How will they respect me as their captain if I can’t even host?” He goes on his over dramatic shakespearean (not really but you know what I mean) monologue about being ridiculed by the team.
“Ok ok I get it. You need it now.” And Shane, being the canadian that he is, does not point out the existence of walmart and instead says “go to canadian tire.”
“TIRE? like on car? how will canadian tire help me for cooking?”
“It’s a store Ilya, they don’t just sell car stuff, they have a whole cooking section. They have a lot of stuff actually
And yes, all this was a set up for how Ilya discovered one of his new earthly delights: Frank products. He loves them. Because Ilya is a Dad through and through and he loves bad jokes and puns, and he especially loves indulging in them now that he speaks english well enough to understand/make them. And i’ll die on that hill.
the end.
ilya: oh-oh baby! where the hell is my husband?💃🎶
shane: i’m in the kitchen
ilya: what is taking him so long😭🎶
shane: i’m literally just doing the dishes
ilya: to find me-e-e 🎶
shane: get in here rozanov! you can sing and dry the plates at the same time
ilya, dancing next to shane as he wipes the plates clean: oh-oh baby!
I haven’t made my way into heated rivalry fanfic yet, i’m waiting to finish the canon first, but I have an important question:
Are there any Hudson Williams x Shane Hollander fics yet? Like he really just spoke it to life in that one interview and I would be thoroughly disappointed if no one jumped on the occasion yet. It was my first thought
