Hríd may call you a good friend, but that title is merely a place holder for what he'd actually like to call you. Friend is what he uses to pacify rumours of late night dalliances, to lower raised brows at the closeness you and he share. But there is truth in their suspicions.

All it takes is for someone to take a long look at the pair of you together for things to begin falling into place. How between you both passing glances can turn into stares, how the normally stoic ice prince can't seem to stop himself from smiling in your presence, how no matter the distance between you both in a room, you always end up standing side by side.

When you leave the room his eyes follow and linger where you left, waiting to see if you return. Then he too leaves following your footsteps, it's no coincidence that somehow you both end up together again later on.

Then there's what no one sees, the late night encounters, the walking together through empty barracks, the murmuring of affections behind closed doors, the dancing around discussions about the future through passionate distractions. Friend isn't what you are to him. He knows it, as do you.

"A good friend, am I?" Which is why you grin at the title.

"Is there something else you wish me to call you?" And why he coyly responds.

"Whatever you want to call me is fine, but I think we're past the point of being just friends." He nods.

"I'd prefer to call you my wife." His forwardness leaves you stunned, despite already knowing what your answer to such a question would be. "But please let me ask you properly first," before you can give said answer, he sinks down to one knee, taking your left hand into both of his. "Will you marry me?"

"Yes!"

Wife is the most fitting title for what you are to him. To where when you head your separate ways for now. My wife. He says to himself in a whisper, glancing back at your fleeting form. And it leaves him feeling warm for hours on end.
