It was the first time in months he'd felt grounded, as if he were present and not simply existing for the fact that it was in his basic instincts. There was something still missing, a disconnect, but this. Going on Patrol, protecting the Capitol. Nicholas at least understood that. He knew how to do that. With that, at least, he was in his element.
Nicholas had been patrolling the outer limits of the Capitol's perimeter for nearly two hours before he heard it. It wasn't the mindless stumbling that Nicholas had so become accustomed to with the approach of the undead. There was no guttural groans or snarls. This was distinct footsteps. Shoulders straightening, the tall man turned, his gaze shifting toward whoever was coming toward him. Though his gun remained sheathed at his hip, his palm rested lightly on the handle as he took a step forward. Whoever was approaching, they weren't using the road, or even the beaten paths that traders took upon coming to do business. They were in the brush and wooded area just behind it. That enough was to cause his eyes to narrow warily.
As he spoke, his voice was low and calm, a distinct accent carrying. "Identify yourself, you're on The Capitol's boundaries."
