the fact that cardan knew firsthand what it was like to be a stranger in the undersea— how scary and unnatural it felt. he even said “it felt like being trapped in a small room”. that probably made him feel even more scared and worried for jude when she was kidnapped. it made him even more desperate to get her back.

Everyone brings up the other quote about Cardan noticing Jude in palace school but I feel we don't talk enough about an earlier one when it is soo telling

It was always one of those girls whose smallest movements and behaviors he noticed. Who he stared at as she read a book. Who looked back in suspicion - maybe because you were so clearly staring at her, you little creep (affectionate). Who rattled him so deeply by just looking into his eyes that along with horror over the idea of losing her, her true self, to ensorcellement, there was a terrible relief. Because if she wasn't so present, if she wasn't able to look at him like only she does then he 'would stop feeling the way he did'

#he had a crush on her from day one #but it also terrified him #considering the context around the time it started to develop its even more clear why that fear solidifies along with his feelings #why he avoided and did not pursue them #distracted himself with relationships that reinforced his safety and position instead of weakening him even further #but its also interesting to now know they actually did not interact much before tcp. only briefly during class and most directly during #sparring where she let him win #yet they both felt so strongly so rattled by each other??#and then once they did start to interact even very negatively it took until - what second or third day - for cardan to realise #that 'hes in trouble'?#it went dirt in food -> salt in food -> river where he realised #imo they truly were inevitable cause thats crazyyyy #jurdan #jude duarte #cardan greenbriar #htkoelths #the cruel prince #tfota
