The evolution of an idea, which first came to me over a year ago while looking at a melted candle. The third image is among my most recently finished drawings, with the addition of some watercolor for the green and red portions. One of the primary roles of art is the perception of analogy, and the creation of new associations between otherwise disparate things: here, a sunken candle which becomes a sort of sheath for a fungal-columnar growth.

Three recent pieces, each done on paper using colored pencil, watercolor, and pen. The first was just accepted into a juried show. With the last, I'm pleased to have sort of accidentally arrived at the effect of the colors shifting beneath an outer skin. You can view more of my art on my artist website and Instagram page.

Here's a piece I recently finished that's based on a sketch done late last year (image #2), which was itself very slightly modeled on a photo of an armory building (image #3). Note the apparently pyramidal form, steeply pitched roof, and staggered sequence of lunettes. As often happens, the lunettes and several other details were lost or altered during the transition to a more polished piece.

I'm continuing to experiment with the siting of these structures. The environment here is some sort of bewilderingly dense forest, with masses of stringy foliage hanging down and billowing out. Around the structure, petrified agglomerations rise up. I like the idea that the architecture was once similar to these knobby formations, and somehow evolved out of that -- the implication being that the organic is always embedded within the apparently inorganic.

I'm still not sure how atmospheric I want this work to get, in terms of light, shade, and depth. Right now, I'm enjoying the -- for lack of a better term -- graphic appearance, where the only shading occurs near margins and is indicated by little sequences of linework.
