A Muggleborn Hufflepuff student, Justin Finch-Fletchley was nice and polite when introducing himself, making flattering remarks about Harry and each of his friends. When rumors spread about Harry being the Heir of Slytherin, though, he becomes scared, seeing himself as a potential victim. This is not helped when Harry’s Parseltongue ability is exposed, shortly before Justin indeed does become a victim.

Justin is a name meaning “just, fair”, a trait valued by Hufflepuff. This seems to be a theme he shares with some of his friends, and suits his courteous demeanour.

Finch is a type of small bird.

Fletchley is not a real surname, but it’s similar to “Fletcher”, meaning “arrow-maker”. “Fletching” is also the part of the arrow used to make it aerodynamic, usually made out of bird feathers, making the surname somewhat puny. Hyphenated surnames are sometimes considered “preppy”, which he appears to be, considering his posh speech and the fact that he was going to Eton College, before he was called to Hogwarts.

Hogwarts Houses Studying

Gryffindor: beautiful notes at the beginning and scrunchy at the middle, the feeling before solving a challenging exercise, all nighters, drinks 4 cups of coffee per day, “I’m gonna destroy this test”, “fight me chemistry”, when walking between book shelves feels like is absorbing knowledge by osmosis

Ravenclaw: mind maps, color system for notes, smells jelly pens and book pages, a lot of stationery, “ok, now what do I do with all of these pretty notebooks I just bought impulsively”, tea tea tea

Slytherin: badass handwriting (scrunchy, but still pretty), study groups, could possibly buy a pushcart to carry all the books they would take from the library, classical study playlist, flashcards, when confident to a test looks confident, when insecure for a test looks confident

Hufflepuff: healthy snacks, reads out loud when studying alone, “I’m just gonna take a nap before I study oh shit I overslept”, organized desk, morning person, pretty bullet journal, tries not to freak out after reading the first sentence of a hard exercise

Hufflepuff 4th year: i love the fact that like… if you wanted to you could throw a chair… stool…lamp… medium sized houseplant… even a lightweight table… there’s nothing physically stopping you from throwing furniture around, only social constructs and your own cowardice.

When I listen to the classes I recorded on my phone I feel like Hermione Granger at third year with the time turner, attending to a class she already seen but needed to revise or that she missed.

I imagine my 3-weeks-ago self paying attention to the class and my now self listening to it too.

Herbology Professor Pomona Sprout is the Head of the Hufflepuff House. An overall nice woman, and her skills could be a lifesaver, as she grew the Mandrakes for reviving petrified people in 1992.

Pomona was the Roman goddess of fruit trees, gardens, and orchards. The name comes from Latin pomum (“fruit”).

“To Sprout” means “to grow from seed“, as a plant.

Katie Bell’s friend Leanne witnessed her touch the Opal Necklace, but she didn’t know who gave the package to her.

Leanne is a combination of “Lee” (”clearing, meadow”) and “Anne” (“grace”).

A Hufflepuff girl in Harry’s year, Hannah Abbott (pictured, possibly on the left) would go on to become Prefect, along her friend Ernie Macmillan. She appears to be insecure, as she broke down crying when studying for her O.W.L. exams, sobbing that “she was too stupid to take exams and wanted to leave school” and had to be the first to take a Calming Draught from Madam Pomfrey. In her 6th year, her mother was one day found dead in her home, and she had to leave school. In the future, she married Neville Longbottom, and became landlady of The Leaky Cauldron; but she eventually gave up and decided to train as a healer, applying for the job of Matron at Hogwarts in 2014.

Hannah is a name that means “grace”, attributed to “he (God) has graced me with a child”. It’s also the name of a biblical character who had a rival with children, while she remained barren (until she was blessed with a son). This is perhaps meaningful, as she and Neville are one of the few couples among their friends who have no known offspring, as of now.

Bonus: In Rowling’s “Original Forty” list, she was apparently marked as a Muggleborn. (source) However, the Abbott family is one of the “Sacred Twenty-Eight” Pureblood families. (source) In a 2007 interview, when fans asked Rowling about her blood status, she replied: “No, I’m pretty sure Hannah’s a Pureblood. [...] Beause I’ve certainly written about her, and thought about her for years now as Pureblood, so that’s interesting. Maybe we’ll just split the difference and call her half-blood. Yeah, that’s how decisions are taken in the fairly random world of J.K. Rowling.” (source)

Bonus 2: It’s worth noting that she shares many similarities with her husband Neville. They’re both insecure, members of D.A., had their parents attacked by Death Eaters, blond, and members of the “Sacred Twenty-Eight”. Hannah even attempts to get a job at Hogwarts, like Neville. Also, Neville was nearly sorted to Hufflepuff.
