CHECKING-IN to Hulakai

Welcome to paradise, Hulakai is a remote Inn (for lack of a better description) hidden in the hills outside San Juan Del Sur and above a trifecta of epic beaches. It is part community, part hostel, part boutique hotel and part B&B.

It is anything but average. The laid-back surfer vibe can be felt as soon as you check-in. Fittingly, we were......

greeted by an expat Canadian couple who were working for the hotel as an opportunity to extend their year long Central American backpacking trip. In fact, all the Millennial staff have similar stories. Most of them ended up here while visiting and just couldn’t leave to go back to a more traditional life back home (whatever that might be).

The hotelier behind Hulakai is a father to three young children. His welcome also came with some strong parental warnings (beware of scorpions, tropical creepy crawlers, strong undertows and the gate-less infinity pool). But beyond these potential dangers, the hotel is warm and welcoming to families who make the effort to visit.

You will absolutely be rewarded for that effort. The beaches are spectacular, the beautiful pool had stunning views of the ocean below and the amazing sunsets that this part of Nicaragua is famous for. Breakfast was homemade to order each morning - starting at 7AM which fit our schedule perfectly. We also enjoyed the family-style meals served every evening at 7PM. And if you are lucky enough to spend a Tuesday at Hulakai, well you won’t want to miss their Taco Night (Taco Tuesday - go figure). Atticus and Archer loved the live music and gobbled up the delicious tacos. Unfortunately we had to duck out early so we missed the arabesque and silks dancers, fire breathers and more. But I can pretty much guarantee we’ll be back!!
