Featured Animal of the Month - Parrotfish "Uhu"

The Parrotfish, “Uhu” in Hawaiian, can easily be identified by their beautiful pastel colors and Parrot-like beak.

Their fused front teeth are uniquely designed for feeding primarily on coral. In the process, coral is ingested – which is eventually processed and left behind as sand.

FUN FACT: There is a resident male Parrotfish in Kealakekua Bay named Harold that our videographers have had the pleasure of filming for 8 years!

With a coral rich diet, Parrotfish are one of the top sand producing tropical ocean creatures. One Parrotfish can produce three tons of white sand in it’s lifetime! If you’re ever out snorkeling with us in Kealakekua Bay, you can actually hear Parrotfish munching on the coral.
