Could’ve gotten the sequel if Universal hadn’t failed to meet the deadline.
I appreciated how despite being kind of an antagonist for our heroes, Ross did a bunch of reasonable stuff in this one mostly, rather than just whining about how missiles are more powerful than muscles.
So Thunderbolt Ross is my new favorite character and avatar.
No, you shouldn’t have, because the Gamma Ray Gun did not exist until this moment I’m pretty sure, and also, even Banner doesn’t know what it will do, if anything.
Forever? That’s kind of fucked up, we aren’t even sure what they do when you surrender. Also, I don’t think the moon would return to its orbit, you’d probably be fucked.
I mean, he saved RUSSIA too! Also, you could probably hide the fact that he did it, there’s no real proof. Also, damn, Rick is really putting himself on the line here. I’d probably leave and come back in the morning so if the Hulk breaks out he doesn’t murder me. But the narrator says that Rick is waiting for their next adventure, so he is obviously some kind of adrenaline junky.
All in all, another great Hulk story. The aliens here were the weakest part, and I think the traitor storyline was kind of wasted, but also, they would only have one day to hold him before the Hulk happened, so I get it. Four stars. Speaking of four, the next comic is... still not the Fantastic Four. Looking at publishing dates, the Order decided that you should read the Sub-Mariner one right after Johnny leaves the FF because there’s some continuity there, so now we go for a while without any.
Nice. they interrupt Jones before he can finish trying to convince the Hulk to save everyone. The Hulk will end up a hero, of course, but we don’t want to rush that. This keeps the Hulk’s motivations confusing and inscrutable. I think the Hulk would have probably said yes, since he’s smart enough to know that the complete destruction of his planet would suck, but if he did, it would weaken the impact of the Hulk in future issues.
“Doc, shut the fuck up about your angsty bullshit, aliens are attacking.”
Again, we see that the Hulk goes to Bruce Banner’s lab, like the Rick guessed, not because Rick knows the Hulk very well, but because he knows BRUCE well. And why does he hate you? Because Bruce thinks he hates you. I mean us, I guess, since she’s talking about humanity.
Ohohohohooo shit.
That’s even better. I said that his motivations are either taken from Bruce or from Bruce’s view of the Hulk, but this kind of implies that it’s more the former. After all, men didn’t do anything to the Hulk, but Igor and Rick are kind of responsible for Bruce turning into him. In the first issue, before Bruce knew about the Hulk, he was mostly happy to be the Hulk rather than some weakling, but here, we might be getting some insight into Bruce’s feelings. A part of him blames humanity for his transformation, and the Hulk is acting on that secret resentment.
That’s not what would happen! I mean, it doesn’t matter much, since all humans would die, but the earth wouldn’t get exploded from getting hit with the moon, it would be the same as if you hit the moon with the earth.
YEAH BUT WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THEY SURRENDER?! THAT’S THE QUESTION THAT YOU STILL HAVEN’T ANSWERED, AND I THINK IT’S PRETTY IMPORTANT.
Also, have you tried calling in Jeb? He’s pretty good at dealing with alien invasions.
Last time I think I highlighted some of the art surrounding the Hulk’s transformation, but here I think the writing is really carrying it. Even just the small touch of his throat growing tight, while he grabs at it with both hands as the transformation takes hold makes us imagine what it feels like for Bruce Banner, and tells us that it’s unpleasant.
Here we also see the Hulk remembering something that happened only to Bruce Banner. So even though now he can remember things that happened himself, he can also remember...
Holy shit.
Okay, so here’s the thing. We’ve never seen the Hulk remember something that happened to him. We’ve only seen him say and do things (like decide to kill all of humanity) that don’t seem to make sense unless he can remember stuff from previous times. But there is another way this could happen.
In the flashback at the start of this issue, Bruce Banner says “It will be the Hulk against all mankind!” What if the Hulk’s motivations are not only being determined by his memories of being Bruce Banner, but also his memories of Banner’s speculation as to how the Hulk will act. He remembers thinking that the Hulk wants to destroy humanity, and so he attempts to do so. He remembers thinking that Rick Jones is the only one he can fully trust, and so he does that too. That means that Banner’s fear of the Hulk is actually making the Hulk more dangerous!
Yeah, the Hulk might be able to break out of jail, but he might also kill everyone there to do it, and he’s already said that he wants to kill all humans. Come to think of it, in issue 1 Hulk didn’t seem to remember his previous existences, but in this issue it’s clear he does.
Ha! Nothing “human” indeed!
General Ross is a dumb idiot who’s always wrong, but he’s right. He’s not jumping to conclusions, that was a weird unexplained thing, and his job is to report it and wait for a decision to be reached. And Betty saying that they’ll need Bruce Banner to stop the alien invasion doesn’t work for me. I guess people don’t know about the skrulls? I mean, at one point the Fantastic Four were the most wanted people in America, but fuck it, maybe they came up with a good excuse for why they were cool again.
Although actually, even though these will eventually be in the same world, they haven’t crossed over yet, so maybe they aren’t technically canon to each other yet. All we know is that Fantastic Four exists in the same world as the Sub-Mariner.
