It was recently pointed out to me that for an angel to give someone their grace or for someone to take it away, the angel usually has to be cut open. Metatron did it to Cas and Cas did it to Theo. So now I'm thinking that Cas maybe only healed Sam at the end of the ep but still has Theo's grace...? I hate we're not gonna see Cas again til after the Olympics:/
Yeah there has to be like a transference for sure. Kind of the idea that you cut it out of their throat and take it in through their mouth, Anna, Cas, etc etc making angels grace to be like a possession with consent.
BUT the issue with the grace thing is that there seems to be a consciousness in the body without grace in there. Like. Cas is still Cas OR WAS HE without his grace.
Like, if Cas’ grace is in a jar in Metatron’s pocket. And we assume that Jimmy has long since left Cas’ body given [meta][confirmation from misha] then what WAS Cas in 9x01-9x09. Like, what was Sam when he was soulless what IS a soul if not your consciousness. And if grace is like a human soul, important to who a person is but not their consciousness. Then was human!cas even really “Cas” as we know him or, much like soulless!sam he isn’t REALLY him because there are parts of his personality that are entwined with his soul/grace.
It also brings up the issue of if you DO have to be physically cut open and extracted, which is what we have SEEN so far but not for sure the truth, we don’t know how Anna gave away her grace, we don’t a lot about how it all works and if they DO have to have their neck slit what does that say about Abner. Who wasn’t stabbed with an angel blade but his neck was slit. Does that mean that Abner is still alive, and if his grace was put into another body he could be just a normal angel possessing that body OR would it be like Theo where Cas took his GRACE and not his consciousness. Is Cas’ personally affected by having Theo’s grace and not his own?
Does grace just make you angelic, aka the species and the temperament of that species no matter who’s it in and its a more change of state or is it connected to who they are. I mean human!Anna and angel!Anna were night and day in perception of the universe but how do you quantify that. Cas was different when he had ALL those souls in him but was that his own delusion created out of his OWN personality or did it have to do with having Leviathans and all those souls inside of him. Was it more than what power does to people in the way that those souls literally altered his personality or did the absolute power naturally drive him to feel like God. You know?
ANDDDDDDDDDDD if having grace in you does depend on WHO’S grace and your grace is more than what species you are but is a part of who you are in the same way a soul is then what does that mean for Cas having Theo’s grace? Theo was an enforcer, he had a violent profession within that rebellion and we’ve seen Castiel in 9x10 act in violence, does it make a difference? And what about Sam. He has grace in him. Does that make him angelic. Or do you have to have the “soul” or consciousness of an angel to BECOME an angel if you have grace in you. If having an angel in him was slowly healing him does that mean that with that grace he on his own had the power to heal himself to a degree because of the grace. Does that make him part angel or like Cas with the souls is he not “God” but a mutilated angel in the same way he’s not an angel he’s just a mutilated person.
And to your question. If they took out the grace that Sam had in him that was necessary to be in him to heal him, but wasn’t enough to heal him fully. It was what was left over. Which had to STAY him him to fix him but he was still wasn’t at 100% because he needed the full possession, the full angel powers. So if Cas is healing him, is HE healing him (since he said that couldn’t be done) or is he doing it like Gadreel is doing it and LEAVING Theo’s grace in him. And if they took out ALL of Gadreel’s grace. Which as you seen in comparison to Cas’ and Anna’s grace was no small part, how much of Theo’s grace must he have put in Sam to heal him completely. AND, it seems like with angels they can recharge their battery, use a lot of power, wait for a certain amount of time, and then they’re back to full power. But what happens when it’s not your grace. Is is like when an angel is in a vessel that isn’t their true vessel? Is it imperfect so their are compatibility issues?
It would make a lot of sense to me if Cas COULDN’T recharge Theo’s grace. If it’s gone it’s gone. So when he gave a part, or even so much as 1/2 of his grace to fully heal Sam after they took out Gadreel’s grace. I personally think it would make a lot of sense if Cas, as he uses his grace, he loses his grace and is slowly becoming human (much like in season 5 as he was slowly losing his grace and becoming more human).
But they may very well have it not matter and have Cas be as much of an angel as any of the others even with it not being his grace. He is a new kind of animal. There is no way, really, to understand what makes Cas Cas or what it means to have another persons grace/soul inside of you. We’ll have to see, going forward what they do with it.
