Book of the Month: The Supporting Character Devotes Herself Not to Trouble the Main Protagonist

My Synopsis: Straight from a zombie apocalypse, transmigrated No. 7 now just wants to spend her days as Wen Yuesheng worshiping Buddha and being left alone. But if people want to keep throwing themselves into the path of death, who is she to stop them?

My Actual Review: First of all, ignore that "harem" tag on novelupdates. Idk who lied, but the main character gives the time of day to no one and it takes the one (1) actual telegraphed love interest til like the end of the novel to worm his way into her heart. The only other character who comes close is the main antagonist (you'll know when you meet him), and this may be the only time that I'm genuinely upset (not bad) that a novel is just one couple from beginning to end. Wen Yuesheng has two hands, she could've had two husbands! However don't be fooled, the romance in here is a side note, not a significant plot point. On a more serious note, I know I like to talk about characters who choose violence as their first option, but I've never read a story like this where the main character just goes straight for the kill every time a character crosses her. Like, girl is judge, jury, and executioner. Turned a dying empire into the world's powerhouse nation. Took down every single person in her way. Cleaned. House. I finished reading and immediately wanted to go back to Chapt. 1. I will be rereading it right after I finish typing this up. If you love a main character that bulldozes through every obstacle, you will love Wen Yuesheng.

As good as the novel is, I do have some content warnings for war, discussions of sexual violence and trafficking (tied to war), some graphic violence, child abuse, and lots of descriptions of people being publicly beaten to death. I want to say it's not the heaviest novel I've read, but there's something about Wen Yuesheng's whole vibe that makes the entire novel more somber than perhaps it would have been with a... livelier? main character. As for the translation, it's an edited mtl that becomes lighter on the "edit" as it gets closer and closer to the end. Titles and forms of address keep shifting and changing, and I think even at one point the editor confuses two of the princes’ names (One is "Ji" and the other is "Jin") so you really just have to be careful about paying attention to how characters behave and who is doing what to know wtf is going on in some places. It's doable, just very annoying.

Novel of the Month: The Abused Protagonist Goes Off-Script

My Synopsis: If The Glory was a danmei novel

My Actual Review: I'm so serious when I say nothing has ever given me the high that I got from watching The Glory until I found this novel. It's not so much that the plots are exactly the same (different genres, themes, etc. though the overarching theme of extreme abuse connects them) but that the extreme hatred that both MCs of their respective media feel towards the people who dragged them to and beyond their breaking points feels distilled and utilized in the exact same way. Like, a lot of rebirth novels, especially about family, tend to have the MC take the route of either exposing the antagonists' hypocrisy or just leaving everyone behind altogether and only fighting back when actively messed with, but Song Shiyi goes all in in making everyone's lives an absolute living hell. Not only does he just go feral nearly killing some characters with his own two hands, he also weaponizes his "craziness" to force his reputation-obsessed father to shield him from legal persecution even while he publicly wiles out. Add in the fact that he uses his knowledge of future events to get into the minds of his abusers... Song Shiyi feels less like a character at times and more like a resentful spirit physically haunting the narrative. This novel was fucking fantastic. (Oh, and the romance was sweet, too, but obviously that was not my focus this time around lol).

I have some content warnings for child abuse, relationship abuse, some semi-graphic sexual violence, some really graphic general violence, murder, and probably some other dark stuff I'm forgetting. Song Shiyi should have been allowed to starve all these people for a week before throwing them into a coliseum with box cutters and telling them the last one standing gets to eat a single slice of white bread. Keep a recording to burn as an offering for his mother. That's how terrible everyone (except the MC) was in this.

Book of the Month: After Rebirth, The Real Young Master Began to Maintain His Health

My Synopsis: After one lifetime of struggling until a miserable death, Chen Mo has decided he's gonna try for a leisurely, effortless life after being reborn, instead. This does not conflict with him beating the brakes off anyone who tries to stop him.

My Actual Review: This novel is like a mix between Who Cares, wherein the reborn protagonist decides that actually, they would rather not give a fuck about the useless family that will never love or respect them, and Transmigrating into the Heartthrob Cannon Fodder's Childhood Friend, where the protagonist is also wholly unafraid to simply beat people who irritate them to death. Chen Mo was doing shit that really had me going, "...does he not fear the law???" (and the answer would be no). I found myself very entertained with Chen Mo's early antics, moved by him finding himself and his own life ambition outside of "be accepted by either my shit bio family or my absolutely shit kidnapper adoptive mother," and cheered by his unwillingness to be mean to or give up on himself. I also really liked the romance in this novel, which started out as harmlessly antagonistic (LI is sent to tutor the MC, who has decided he will try his hardest in nothing, to get him into the top 10 of his class) and ended on heartwarming protectiveness. With that said, there is a serious trigger warning for child and domestic abuse, including descriptions of some instances, child kidnapping, homophobia, and general violence, including non-graphic torture (of side characters). Translation quality is…ok, but this translation has a habit of cutting sentences off into different paragraphs, which is somehow still better than whatever tf all the other translations I tried to read were doing. It’s legible, just annoying. Not a light read, per se, but a short one that feels like it goes by (too) quickly.

Novel of the Month: The Wolf-Hearted Young Master Just Wants to Lie Flat

Rating: M (mostly for sexual stuff but also some of the content warnings)

My Synopsis: Instead of becoming an arsonist and burning his family alive, Qi Xu takes the high road and prioritizes himself for once, leaving his fuck ass family who never deserved him anyways behind. On the other hand, unlike that unworthy lot, Xie Huai learns from the future that never happened to gain the love he was fated to miss out on.

My Actual Review: I actually feel like there may be more building up of the romance than there is getting back at the family stuff, but that is not a critique. The main couple is actually very sweet together, and I love how much Xie Huai goes out of his way to actively pursue Qi Xu. I found myself more invested in the romance side of the story, but the revenge was also very satisfying because Qi Xu's family sucks ass. I wish them a very fuck off forever. The fact that not much blood was shed in this novel is a testament to how much of a saint the MCs are. Everyone deserved a lot worse than they ever got in the story, but that's alright because at least one of the fucked up adults involved got exactly what they deserved 😊 If you don't want to make yourself especially sad about the past life trajectory, skip Chapts. 100-109 cause they do NOT have a happy ending and they WILL make you cry your eyes out. I have some content warnings for homophobia, particularly from family (including the LI experiencing corporal punishment for it), some graphic violence, extreme child neglect and abuse, and just adults being shitty towards their own children (Qi Xu). This story didn't necessarily make me cry (not counting that extra), but it is a little heavy if you are sensitive to the topic of having generally unaccepting parents who are forever disappointing your expectations.

The translations is... legible, but it reads like an mtl that gets less finely edited as the chapters go on. Some sections repeat themselves within chapters, so you have to be careful that you don't glaze over new paragraphs while skipping through repeats, names are sometimes inconsistent, and there are pronoun and subject-verb mix-ups. Could be better, but not the worse thing ever.

Novel of the Month: Bursting After He Transmigrated into the Cannon Fodder Omega

My Synopsis: I guess when you spend you entire life terminally ill and forced to live vicariously through your genius creations, you get blessed in the next life to live out all those dreams for yourself. Or at least that's what happens when Yun Xingze dies and inherits a healthy body with the potential to pilot mecha. If only he could remember that added omega debuff when it matters...

My Actual Review: A regular face-slapping novel with lots of literal face-slapping, lol. I'm usually not one of ABO in non-fanfiction works, but this one worked out enough for me as it didn't feel too intrusive given the fact that the mc, himself, didn't come from an ABO world and thus didn't think about it often (which does lead to some issues). The green tea, boyfriend-stealing antagonist was also interesting for some points in the story related to how the ABO setting and the interstellar setting merged into the creation of a mandatory compatibility marriages (government-mandated breeding program) and how this affected citizens, though I think that the theme of gender discrimination that came with it is very logically weak (people treat omegas as naturally weaker, but they physically are; yet despite this, omegas are not legally barred from any line of work, meaning there's no lawful gender discrimination in the job market. Then there's the mandatory marriage decree that is treated like a death knell for omegas, but seeing as alphas are also forced into these marriages and no polyamorous configurations are said to be legal in this setting, that means that alphas are also trapped in these forced marriages! It's a common trope and heartwarming theme, but the logic falls apart under the slightest scrutiny.) Anyways, what I really like is the romance and all the gestures the LI does to win the MC over. I feel like in other novels, the main pairings tend to fall in love through mutual struggle, but in this one, the LI is actually wooing the MC with some very lovely acts and proposals. This novel has got to have some of my favorite romantic moments in it!

I don't recall many content warnings for this one outside of one scene of body self-mutilation by the MC, but it does deal with sexism (for ABO dynamics) and an attempted forced marriage related to that. Translation is alright from what I can remember, may or may not have repeating paragraphs/sections.

Book of the Month: The Rebirth of an Ill-Fated Consort

My Synopsis: Did you ever think that the Malicious Empress was just too nice? Don't worry, Jiang Ruan won't be.

My Actual Review: I... really have nothing more to say. Jiang Ruan is a great protagonist but also probably one of the most evil people I've read. She really said "y'all want me to be a demoness who destroys the nation? I'll show you demoness who destroys the nation!" (She does not destroy the nation, just many, many people.) She is a character invested in her revenge, like, will show up to watch her enemy's downfall with her own two eyes that she orchestrated with her own two hands. In fact, she is so invested in doing everything herself that it actually becomes a point of showing her closeness to the love interest when she allows him to help her with stuff. Cause a lot of their early (friendly) interactions are him going, "please let me help you 🥺" only for her to be like, "no, I got this." If "merciless" was a person, it would be Jiang Ruan. Some of the traps and tricks do get a little repetitive, but I was always interested in how she would get out of situations and how her enemies never fucking learned (there are only but so many times you can try and FAIL to frame someone for murder before you should start considering the fact that you will never successfully frame her for murder...). On a smaller note, don't take the ages too seriously, cause just like with The Malicious Empress, the author plays very fast and loose with the lead's age. (I swear she starts the story off reborn as a 10yo, and everyone comments on how she is too young to be engaged, but then at other points she's described as being a teen, then after a 3-year time skip, she's supposedly at marriageable age despite the betrothal age being said to be around 14-15, and mind you, despite it feeling like years are passing in real time, the main character never has a birthday. Meanwhile, the love interest is just "in his 20s" or some shit. The lead laments how, counting her rebirth, she is older than him. Who tf knows how old anyone is.)

As always, there are content warnings for this work, which are similar to The Malicious Empress except a lot more graphic. Chapt. 1 is a whole trigger warning for graphic violence and rape, which is why I always skip it upon rereads. More generally, this novel has rape, sexual violence, child abuse, underage marriages (characters generally are married in their teens), general violence, and gore, all with varying degrees of graphicness depending on what scene the author felt like going into detail about that day, I guess. Just proceed with caution in some scenes, and if you choose to skip over them, you're not gonna lose out on plot.

My Actual Review: Let me first confirm that this does have a happy ending. Moving on: I don’t think I’ve felt the type of hope and devastation that this book inspired in me from another piece of media in a long, long time. I can’t even make a joke about it, Lu Feng and An Zhe and so many other named and unnamed characters will really having you feeling the urgency of survival but also the pressure of extinction all at once. As you read, there’s just so much loss: loss of autonomy, loss of joy, loss of lives, loss of talent, loss of dreams, loss of morals, loss of human fucking connection, all these losses for just the faintest glimmer of a collective future. Generations of humans who gave up everything down to their very own personal survival just for the slimmest chance that a future generation will exist and exist with hope. I’m not saying if any one character’s choice of action in the face of these crushing odds was right or wrong, but through all the existentialism and personal crises the novel evoked, I feel like it’s greatest message is that at the end of the day, humans are a collection of individuals willing to sacrifice just about anything for humanity as a whole to survive—even if we may not fully be the “humans” we used to know by the end of it. And maybe this is the thing that makes us human after all.

Content warnings for: death, mass death, a brief attempted sexual assault scene at the beginning, state-sanctioned killing, and a whole lot of other things that I will just call existential crisis fodder. Basically, if a side character has a name, don’t get attached, because there's a 90% chance that was their death flag. Be very gentle with yourself while reading.
