No one seems to notice that these are, in fact, toxic consequences of capitalism.. the way they’ve convinced us..we must always improve in order to be validated by society. There’s a secret rating for every single one of us.. you can see it in their eyes, those stars confirming whether you're good enough, or if you need to do better .So, without even realizing it, you silently get involved in this toxic game....It sucks, in the most hideous way, to have my worth judged.. to get closer to it, to even mention it.. I’m under no obligation to make sense to you...

Douglas Rushkoff: 'Kijk niet naar je scherm, kijk naar elkaar'

Ooit was de Amerikaanse mediacriticus Douglas Rushkoff een van de belangrijkste aanjagers van de digitale revolutie. Nu pleit hij voor meer aandacht voor menselijke waarden.

Dertig jaar geleden dacht u nog dat het internet ons op een prachtige manier zou gaan verbinden.‘

Nou, ik zag dat als een van de mogelijkheden. In mijn eerste boek over het internet, Cyberia, zei ik: het internet kan ervoor zorgen dat mensen op ongekende schaal peer to peer informatie en waarden gaan delen, en een prachtige nieuwe toekomst creëren. Maar ik zag ook al het gevaar dat techbedrijven met het internet aan de haal zouden gaan. Ik vond het mijn taak om een zo aantrekkelijk mogelijk beeld te schetsen van de digitale toekomst, zodat mensen deze zelf vorm zouden gaan geven, en haar niet uit handen zouden geven.’‘Mensen stevenen liever af op een klimaatramp, dan toe te geven aan het enge idee dat zij zelf de toekomst van de planeet kunnen bepalen.’

Dat is niet gelukt.

‘Nee. We leven nu in een aandachtseconomie. Silicon Valley verdient geld met de tijd die wij naar het scherm kijken. Dat betekent dat we worden gemanipuleerd om dat zo lang mogelijk te doen. Op Stanford leren toekomstige techleiders hoe ze ons verslaafd kunnen maken met technieken die zijn afgekeken van Las Vegas. Bijkomend probleem: veel van de algoritmes die Big Tech gebruikt, spelen in op onze meest primaire emoties en angsten. Dat leidt tot verdeeldheid. De brexit en Trump zijn producten van de digitale revolutie.’

Een deel van Silicon Valley deelt uw zorgen. Wat vind u van de Humane Technology-beweging van mensen als Tristan Harris, die zich inzetten voor ‘menselijker’ technologie.

'Het is natuurlijk een stap in de goede richting. Ook ik ben voor menselijke tech. Maar het probleem is wel: veel van deze mensen hebben zelf bij Google, Facebook of Snapchat gewerkt. Ze zijn naar het klasje in Stanford geweest. Ze zien dat er een probleem is, maar ze denken dat meer technologie het antwoord is. Oké, we gaan geen telefoons meer maken die mensen verkeerde dingen laten doen, we gaan ze nu manipuleren om aardiger tegen elkaar te zijn. Maar ik wil geen technologie die me zogezegd humaan behandelt, maar die nog steeds mijn data steelt en mijn gedrag probeert te veranderen.’

So to do the impossible is the most rational and practical thing we can do.
