the steel soldier sits in the trench

faulty sensors looking into the light above

its movements are sluggish, oxidation eating away at its joints and muscles

the salt water bores through it like acid, its fate as inevitable as the tides

it pleads with the damselfish, the seahorses, the rays: “please,” the soldier says weakly. “take me to the surface, where I may move and live!”

the sea life replies “your comrades have fallen to the same fate by bullets and storms. why shouldn’t you?”

creaks and groans of anguish radiate and a red cloud billows into the open sea.

the sharks care not to find out if it is blood or iron.
