The obvious solution is to just make roach absolutely massive. Those mages were already pumping a few hundred orphans per year with experimental and unstable potions and blasting them with magic you think they’d draw the line at animal cruelty?? Nah. If we’re on this train we’re riding it all the way, make roach 30 hands tall (≈10ft for the uninitiated) and 5,000 lbs of abnormally intelligent muscle.
