Every day for the past 8 months, Terezi has felt something just past the range of her senses. A whiff of a painfully familiar perfume, or the sound of a laugh she hasn't heard in person in years. She stalks the campus halls and almost believes that she's going stir crazy from not leaving her dorm to study with how often the nostalgia gnaws away at the edges of her mind. Moving out to pursue her academic prowess had been more of an escape for her than anything. Her mother was ecstatic that she still wanted to continue her education after everything that happened.
The light that filtered through the large windows of the hall overlooking the school courtyard warmed her skin to an irritating degree and her feet carried her quicker across the promenade; her bag clutched tighter to her side. Just as she pushed open the heavy metal doors that lead out to an even warmer summer day, she heard it. She heard her, laughing just a few feet away from her ear and then drifting off again. Terezi's feet pounded against the gravel courtyard and she nearly tripped and fell in her haste to escape the slow brewing dark thoughts. A light breeze brushed past her hair and the sharp scent of flowers filtered into her nose as her heart beat.
She hurtled into the other building, headed for the empty classroom she had taken as her own to complete her work study in peace. The door slammed behind her in a thunderous crash. Terezi leaned back on the wall as tears streaked down her soft cheeks, she sniffled alone in the dark room. She tried to calm herself down, a hand against her chest. The rhythmic drumming of her heart wasn't doing her any favors in that regard.
You CANNOT do this here. Get it together already. She berated herself silently. Terezi took in big breaths of air, her form rising and bowing with each exhale. Harsh, raucous coughs overtook her as she struggled to breathe.
"Wow, you are a mess!" Terezi nearly fell as she heard her voice. "I mean seriously, I leave for a while and you go insane on me? I really didn't take you as the sentimental type." Terezi stands up and she cranes to hear anything else in the room.
"Vriska!? Is that you?" She reached forward and stumbled as her foot absently pushed against her fallen book bag. Nobody responded. The panic rose again. "I still had something I wanted to say to you! Vriska? Are you there?" The room was silent. It felt like a punishment more than a mistake on her part, as if Vriska left the room the moment Terezi noticed her on purpose. Just before she was ready to tear the entire room apart until Vriska talked again, she heard her voice from behind, outside on the school courtyard. Terezi whipped around and was out of the door before she could even think twice about it.
The conversation carried on the wind, but still faint. Despite that, Terezi remembered the exact cadence of Vriska's voice. She remembered that conversation they had. Even when she reached the very bench they sat on, Vriska's voice was faint and no more nearer than it was before. Terezi filled the blanks in on her own.
"Did you see the look on his face when I said we were partners? That old man seemed about ready to keel over in disbelief!" Vriska's face was split in a wide grin. and Terezi joined her in laughing along at the memory of their Professors shock. "I don't know what the big deal is anyway, it's not like we don't get along or some shit. Me and you? We're a great team. I'd be out of luck if I had gone through and transferred last semester somewhere else, that's for sure."
*"It's probably because of all our debates. Our very 'friendly', 'nonconfrontational and unemotional' debates during class." Terezi explained.
"Debates are just banter, everyone else does it." Vriska shrugged and leaned back on the bench. "It's also just fun to have someone on your level for once, you know? The rest of those dolts couldn't hold a candle to me!"
"So you're saying I measure up?" Vriska glanced at her.
"I'd sure hope so. I've already put all my eggs in the Pyrope basket so it'd suck if you didn't!" they both sat in a comfortable lull, talking to one another about meaningless things that had happened that day. Terezi remembered every detail about this day, including the angle at which she had sat on the bench to better hear Vriska as she boasted about her legal dissertation. They both were majoring in law, though had taken different avenues. Vriska was going to become a lawyer who worked for strictly wealthy, high paying clientele.
"I'll take on a case one day that some rich shmuck can't get anyone else to take on, win it, and strike it big! I'll live comfortably with famous people knocking at my office door afterwards." Vriska had told her one day over lunch. "I don't want to really be a normal lawyer. It just doesn't sound exciting I guess."
"A 'normal' lawyer like me, you mean? Miss Serket...you're breaking my poor heart over here! I thought we were getting closer!" Terezi teased.
"Oh whatever! You know what I mean, I don't wanna be stuck doing lame shit like some average joe murdering his wife or something. I want to be apart of every big scandal the future has to offer." She had said this with the same, inspiring sparkle in her eye that a baker might have about opening their future shop. "No offense, but I have to wonder why every lawyer doesn't want that." She stared pointedly at Terezi, her eyes scanned over Terezi in a curious way as if she were trying to make out a difficult picture.
Back on the bench, in a reality much quieter than that nice sunny day, Terezi still held no answer for Vriska. She had only really yearned for so much, and she had lost it all. The voice was gone and Terezi couldn't smell anything on the wind now. The moment had passed just like it always did eventually. She was certain that it'd happen again, though. When she least expected it, she'd hear Vriska again.
