watching huozhe (1994) to take my mind off my own personal horrors but it is THE 'oh the horrors are here at every turn and it's unending' story so let's see how it goes
This book made me cry. That is something that has never happened before. The book tells a story of an old man called Fugui in China during the political and cultural revolutions. I wonder if it is the #corona stress, being a mother, knowledge of the Chinese history and way of life or what, but this book really made an impact on me. Wow, just finished watching "To Live" for history and I can honestly say, this movie is very touching and beautiful. Loved the characters and the setting.

Yimou Zhang's episodic portrait of a family living through 21st century Communist China is masterfully divise. Carefully told, and deeply felt, this drama provides not only unique and personal historical context, but it tells a family's story of just trying to live their lives in a way that could only be described as bittersweet. Is this about a banal evil? Is this about a family triumphant against circumstance? Is this about the ups and downs of life? The film gives you such rich narrative, and begs you to contemplate this family's happiness and sadness.
Highly recommended.
