No matter how you dress it up The Great Wall is big budget, B-movie... a creature feature employing A list talent and, as it turns out, that makes for a pretty fun popcorn action fantasy flick. The plot is simple. The great wall and a massive army, are charged with keeping a nasty horde of hungry, lizard like creatures from attacking and devouring everyone on the other side in China. In this case simple works. So Matt Damon, a skilled mercenary bowman (and side kick) end up at the wall on invasion day. Damon does find himself looking and acting a lot like Kevin Costner in 1991's Robin Hood, he's a little out of place, somewhat odd at times, he's got an accent that kinda comes and goes, yet he still manages to kick ass and entertain. I have to say the reason Damon's character ends up at the wall was totally believable. Made sense. I got over the peculiar casting quickly. The Great Wall has plenty of action. Lots of amazing/impossible bow and arrow shots, plus slicing, stabbing, exploding and of course monster chomping. It's a little silly at times, there is a real 'oh geez' moment at the end, but like I said it's a big budget B-movie, creature feature that is to be expected. I have to get a little film geeky and say the cinematography and the costumes were amazing. If you like Chinese period action fantasy films it is a must. It is directed by Yimou Zhang, who gave us such great films as Hero and House of Flying Daggers (that should gives you an idea of what I mean Chinese period action films). Zhang has said he created the role just for Damon (So please direct all the white washing comments for films that deserve them). Even if you're just a Damon fan, like Zhang, or you just like seeing bunches of monsters mashing teeth and getting slain, The Great Wall is worthy of a viewing, especially the at the price of a rental. I went in skeptical, with low expectations, but came out pleasantly surprised. Side note: My daughter, who loves a Korean Pop music, was pumped to see LuHan formally of the K-Pop band #EXO... so for all you #kpop lovers there is this little bonus. #thegreatwall #mattdamon #yimouzhang #actionmovies #creaturefeature #redbox #netflixandchill #luhan (at Great Wall of China)

Wow, just finished watching "To Live" for history and I can honestly say, this movie is very touching and beautiful. Loved the characters and the setting.
