please please please get out now! it’s the best thing to do for yourself and your family.

if you’re staying be sure to get

batteries/light sources

canned goods and non perishables

water! fill up your bathtub and/or sink and buy water from a store when it’s safe to go out

blankets/sweatshirts to keep you warm in case you need a way to stay warm

spray paint! use to write somewhere in a visible location the amount of people in your house and an information about the people (newborn child, disabled adult)

keep an emergency bag in case you need to get out. put water, lights, chargers, canned goods, etc. fill it up as much as possible! leave no extra space in the bag

charge all portable chargers and all contact devices

write your information (name/age/illness/important info) on your arm in sharpie, cover with hairspray and then blow dry (this will keep it from coming off in case you get wet)

if you have a pet get food for it if you’re running out!

keep a first aid kit for emergencies

have a radio tuned to the weather station

don’t go to your attic! it’s so easy to get stuck

if you go to your attic, set an axe up there before everything gets crazy so you can get out

idk maybe get flares

store a sleeping bag somewhere dry

stow away any valuables you can’t bring with you in a safe (preferably locked) place

do not go out when the storm is hitting really hard! and after it ends there will be flooding so please stay inside

if you 100% need to go out make sure you have a form of id with you at all times and don’t use your car! you could get trapped

don’t play in the water/go swimming; it is most likely going to be dangerous to be in

to everyone who lives on the shore- it’s going to be so, so hard and will be awful to have to leave your home and return after the storm. during sandy, the jersey shore was completely destroyed and i remember walking around my beach town seeing where all the big houses used to be just left destroyed. the boardwalks were ripped up and it was like a ghostown. where i live, trees were knocked everywhere and there was a fire on my street. it’s going to be so hard but y’all can take this and beat it. endless love and support ❣️

Hurricane Flo update!

First off:

While there was no real damage to our apartment, we did lose all our refrigerated and frozen food. Getting food this week was super expensive because of low supply. If you want to help us recoup those losses I would be super grateful!

Thanks so much! Extra money is going to be donated to local places. I will be linking some places later that need some extra help. Most are animal rescue places because humans have a lot more resources to cash in on and get what they need. A lot of the non-profits are getting capped at repair amounts and are struggling to get their animals taken care of properly. I can't image the stress them must be under.

I have had a ton of people ask me why the hell I stayed, especially when I knew that there was a high chance it was going to hit as a Cat 4. I stayed to do animal care for our lab animals at school. Due to some dumb shit, our animals weren't relocated so Nicole and I decided to stay and I am glad we did. Most people aren't back yet and had we not stayed we would have lost so many of our animals (their water bottles last for 7 days MAX). Their wellbeing is our number 1 priority, well above our own (as we learned after talking about it lol). It's been rough. Between the generators running out of gas, broken AC units, and general chaos in the city, it's been interesting to say the least. We lost one animal but we think it was due to stress but everyone else recovered VERY well from the heat and STRESS. Was it worth the risk? Yes, would we do it again? Yes. If anything higher than a mid 3 strikes, we are going to fight so hard to get them transported out. Learning experiences all around.

Now on to the update!!

1) Nightbane and I stayed with Nicole (a 2nd year grad student I work with) for the worst of it. The biggest problems we had were ourselves, honestly. Things generally went pretty smooth, or as smooth as they can for a Cat 2. We found out we had power, got dropped off, got bored, Nicole finally got power. All is mostly well.

2) Storm doors. Can't trust em.

3) We (Nightbane and I) are home! I have my car! No real damage to our place, the parking deck was a good place for the car but the inside is a bit soggy, happens with a 40 year old car I suppose. Harris teeter on S College has food. We had chicken today. This is the first not carb food I have in a week. It was wonderful.

4) The apartment grounds look really bad. Poor tree choices called for a lot of tipsy pines and that really sucks for my upstairs neighbor. Maybe now the apartment will fix the leaky poop water in the bathroom. I doubt that though.

5) It's wet out. Wilmington will recover, though it will take some time. ***If you can afford it (trust me, I get it), please don't come back for a while.*** 90% of gas stations are out of gas, food and supplies are limited, flooding is still happening. Let those who have been here the whole time restock and not fight with those coming back into town. Don't be an asshole about this. Not everywhere has power yet. Internet is down and during the day mobile data is almost impossible to use. Let the crews do their repair work. Stay out of the way and come home when ILM is in recovery, not crisis.

6) Campus feels like it's been closed and will be closed forever. I am bored and running out of things to clean.

7) I'm glad Nightbane stayed (I tried to send him away when I thought it was going to hit at a Cat 4). I think Nicole, Amelia, and I would have died without him a few times lol

We did have a tornado do a quick drop and pull back up the last night of the bands. I just about shit myself. No extra damage but stiiiiiiill.

Stay safe out there. Nature is scary and I almost peed myself because of it. Take care of each other. It sucks right now.

Western NC. Predictions say 2-14" of rain. This will be accompanied by straight line winds, flooding, and mudslides.

I can't believe it's been two months since my last update and I don't want to go too much into my return. I can't explain much but I was on vacation in August and now I'm in the middle of moving and I may or may not return. I have a lot of things to figure out. But I needed to get some anxieties off my chest.

I'm hoping to have a much needed lazy weekend and that we don't lose power. I'm in North Carolina. And if you've been paying attention to weather you know that my weekend might be a bit wet. I live in the suburbs of Charlotte, which means I'm roughly 170 miles inland. It is expected that we will get heavy rain and wind which can still be dangerous. I live near roads that are prone to flooding with a normal storm. It is starting to get cloudy out and it's been a windy day. I'm mainly concerned about my friend that lives on the coast. I'm worried that my boyfriend will probably have to still work because he works at Bullseye (huge corporations ugh). Also concerned about my parents property on the SC coast.

Other residents of the area have been freaking out all week. The grocery stores are completely out of water and bread. The gas station lines are very long. I'm showing my age here but one of my earliest memories is when Hurricane Hugo hit in September 1989. It was a Category 4 when it made landfall in SC and it was a Category 1 when it made it to Charlotte. The fact that it stayed strong over land is what made it unique. There was extensive damage, our power was out for weeks, and people sold "I survived Hurricane Hugo" t-shirts. So I think when especially when Flo was still a Category 4 I think people that remember or have heard about Hugo are fearful of that damage happening again.

Despite forecast saying we're just getting a lot of rain and wind, we are prepared. I'm used to keeping a lot of canned food around, peanut butter is a food group, I bought a case of water last night, I got bread last week. I have cereal and cashew milk (I'm allergic to dairy), I think I'm going to get some ice on my way home tonight, etc. I think I'm pretty good.

Anyway I've rambled enough. I wish you all well and if any of you are also Carolinians, have a safe weekend and try to stay dry.
